Yesterday was the first ice swim of the year - great fun! Not that everyone would share my view.......but the sun was shining, the sky was blue and the lovely lifeguards had chipped away the ice to give us a small pool which tinkled as you swam through it. So pretty with all the frosty white trees around. The rest of the day was spent warming up, chatting with DB and Mr N then a little drive as I realised I'd dropped my watch somewhere by the lake. Saw it safely on the office desk by peering through the door as it was all locked. Drove the scenic route home and prepared a frittata for dinner. Spent the evening packing the small amount I need for a couple of days in Dorset.
Today, set off after breakfast with DB driving my car which was nicer for me than making the 130mile trip alone and there was no point in Mr N coming to see the house clearance man on Tuesday. Stopped en route to collect my watch; judging by the squeals and laughter, the ice lake was still being enjoyed. Frost was really thick and everything looked beautiful and sparkly. Dropped DB off and finished the journey to Mum's house. Lots of clearing still to be done but I've made a good start.
- took down the Christmas tree. I'll keep most of the baubles and managed to throw away some really tatty stuff. Not sure about the tree; it is quite old and the bulb doesn't work so will seek Mr N's advice later on whether it is worth keeping. Gathered together all Mum's other cards, gift bags and wrapping paper to take home.
- fortunately a charity bag had been put through the door, hopefully recently, for collection tomorrow so I've sorted out some shoes, handbags and jumpers which filled it.
- sorted out a box of new undies to take in to the care home as spares for Mum
- emptied 2 drawers from a chest; some to go to Mum, some to be disposed of as she seems to have a lot of garments with paint on!!
- went through one old pottery casserole dish seemingly used to store practically anything! An eclectic mix of screws, elastic bands, screwdrivers, washers and umpteen things I couldn't begin to recognise. Threw a lot away and left the rest for DB to decide whether any of the tools/screws etc would be useful.
- did a similar task with what I'd call a pencil holder which actually held (as well as pens and pencils) plant labels, the wooden stirrers you get from C0sta, more screwdrivers. Threw away anything useless, have a small pile of writing implements, tools went into the casserole and the actual holder is now soaking in hot soapy water.
So tomorrow Mum's best friend is coming for coffee as there are a couple of things she'd like as mementos as Mum hasn't room for any more pictures or ornaments in the care home. Then I'm going to go round the house listing anything I want to draw the attention of the house clearance man to. He has an antique shop himself and also has contacts for other 'sellables' as well as charity shops and recycling centres, with landfill being his stated last resort. I'm not anticipating finding anything of immense value, but who knows as some of it may be sellable.Remember...a layer of dust protects the wood beneath it.8 -
Sounds like a productive day Narco, bet you will be glad when it's done.
We changed our mind about going to the coast as there is a lot of ice around. One of our local beauty spots has been putting messages out asking people not to travel there because the local roads and car parks still have snow, so we decided to be sensible.
We went for a walk from home instead and saw deer. Came back to potter about, I have washed my big winter dressing gown and updated my spreadsheets. Oh and I did some Pilates.
I am feeling quite calm and relaxed considering it's work tomorrow.8 -
Evening all. Busy day here.
Wordle in four. Poppy started the day by being sick but perky enough for a walk. Actually the busy day wasn't here. It was at DDs house decorating the nursery ready for DGS. Brought DGD2 home with me for her sleepover.
New year, new routine. It will only be her here now on Mondays as DGD1&3s mum is returning to work tomorrow so we'll only see them at weekends.
See you all on the new thread.Spend less now, work less later.7 -
Evening all. Well done to those of you who have achieved a lot - or even a little - this weekend.
I finished off the church stuff in time for this morning's service, and afterwards spent some time talking to people and hearing about their problems. I hope that getting it off their chests has helped a bit, because there is very little else that I can do in practical terms atm. I had taken some old NT and EH magazines with me and put them in the church book swap box; I also gave all the fronts off our Christmas cards to a friend who makes them into new cards. Fer-ling!
While the soup was cooking for lunch, I decided to sort the empty jars that are stored in the same cupboard as the plastic food boxes: that resulted in decluttering 9 glass jars with lids and 2 plastic ones into the recycling box - another small success, Fer-ling!
DH was out this afternoon. The temperature here has been above freezing today so I managed to take Rosie for a very slightly longer walk than we did last week. When we got home, I made myself a cuppa, sat down, and promptly fell asleep. This evening I have cooked risotto (except I made it with barley, for a change), eaten it, and watched the Midwives. That's it, I'm afraid. I'm not going to start photo sorting at this time of night.
See you on the new thread xxx7 -
