DigForVictory said:We have several copies of Self Sufficiency - can't imagine how. I was always dryly amused that it included a wife & her labour. As how different The Good Life would have been without couples... That some of us have struggled with OHs who do not Get It, to read of a situation where the opportunity to go fishing came up & he phones his wife to drive up & meet hm & quite a lot of mackerel - I don't think I took it entirely seriously as a child. All that Yes Minister comedy (which was in fact very close to the actual truth) meant my perception of where the laugh out loud line was drawn was a bit skewed.
I was another admirer of YM and am always imagining what's going on behind the scenes when politicians pontificate in public, invariably my imaginary Sir Humphrey and Sir Arnold are exasperated by the latest idiocy and say so trenchantly.6 -
I'm at mum's, can't give you chapter etc & it may not be mackerel but I did wonder what his missus' response might be. He was chuffed - food and trade goods, but I lay serious odds she'd have got the bulk of the gut & filleting..
The wonder of Sir Humphrey is that while he might have blisteringly strong views on something, he was far too professional to say them aloud. Although I daydream [Nope, edited out, No Politics!] might have pushed that.. I also have him sat somewhere (frightfully discreet, with really good food) discussing Machiavelli and Sir Arnold admiutting there was a lot of interesting stuff...7 -
Loved Yes, Minister and Yes, Prime Minister - so close to what was going on in American politics at the time too. I have both on DVD. Was very upset by the ending of the Good Life. Would like a different spin-off to it done in current time. My father's favorite show was The Last of the Summer Wine. Mine was Dad's Army. Don't get a chance to watch much tv now. Any comedy shows that people would recommend?7

Also loved YM and YPM and once read they got audiences in from the civil service to be certain everyone would get it and laugh appropriately!
Not a comedy but am currently really enjoying re watching James Herriot on the i plyer - such a gentle programme, yes, some sadness, but the kindness of the time comes through (so much so DP wants to move to the Dales!)Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became
In the event the proverbial hits the fan then co-habitees are better stashing their cash than being mortgage free !!7 -
Gone a bit mad at the Bedale car boot sale this morning. Got a large pink Caithness glass bowl for £3, a jug & bowl set for £5 and a lovely lady was selling loads of Hobbs clothes so I relieved her of a green & black floaty dress for £12 and as part of my ‘wear wot you flipping well like’ campaign a dark denim jackett for £5.And…..still got the big Thirsk car boot to plunder this afty ☺️12

I love the dress @Miró. You're always finding lovely clothes!
I'm also a fan of YM and YPM and not so long ago saw a copy of the full scripts of YM in a chazzer. I walked out thinking that it would still be there the next day if I wanted it - and of course it had goneNo man is worth crawling on this earth.
So much to read, so little time.7 -

hear hear to pockets! Also comfortable & washable (not 'everything to be machine washed', I love wool too much & very few shoes or boots will tolerate a spin cycle), but not as in 'need a couture-trained maintenance team'
Awkward question, pocket to be wine bottle size or paperback size.
Plus has anyone seen a petticoat (or other shapewear) that includes a bottleopener or am I expected to carry a handbag for that?6
