People buy EVs not because they're told to, but because they are an undeniable solution to the big problem facing us today, climate change.
More than happy to pay VED.
I only went EV as it is the cheapest option.
18 months in & £161 to charge car. Which is around 2 months fuel in the old HEV, doing the same miles.

Got to agree with B_A.  A fair chunk of EV buyers aren’t wanting to save the planet, they want to save money.  Favourable company car schemes, and cheap tariffs.  But if the advantages disappear, like having to pay VED, then you’re going to lose a chunk of the buying base.

So, so many things incorrect in that statement.

It's a bit like the government saying every person in the country has to wear size 6 footwear, great for those that suit a size 6.
  • There are several things at play here.
    1. The cost of oil will increase in real terms as the supplies run out. 100 years ago it cost 1 barrel of oil (in energy terms) to extract 100 barrels. Currently the yield is 10 to 15 barrels; with tar sands it's 5 barrels. So a move to renewables is inevitable.
    2. Burning fossil fuels is damaging to our long-term future. Reducing their use is essential.
    3. So for the greater good, we should be phasing out fossil fuels. But individuals' convenience may conflict with that - and there's the fallacious argument 'whatever change I make can't be enough to matter, so I won't change,' described by economists as the Tragedy of the Commons.
  • A day trip to the coast requires no more charging if you get stuck in traffic or if you don’t, you may even use less battery capacity when slowed down by heavy traffic.

With a posible 200 mile round trip, it would be unwise not to charge it at your destination, you make make it home or maybe not.
  • EVs are not a panacea fix, they are okay if not too heavy, do much milage to get payback and not charged via diesel generators like currently done at many bus stations.

Here is a link to our rising co2 levels, it's continually rising.

As of February 2024, there were over 40 million electric vehicles (EVs) on the road globally. So EVs have changed nothing.
I think EVs can be just as good as an ICE vehicle, but we are all doomed :)

Many EVs will easily do in excess of 200 miles on a single charge. Anything from Tesla, the 64kWh Leaf models, more than half of the Kia and Hyundai models etc.

If you look at manufactuer MPG figures compared to real-life figures, a substantial reduction is normal.

Government has nothing to do with charging facilities. More than enough to travel around the country already.

What about a day when the sun comes out and there are tailbacks of vehicles going to the coast, where will they be charged?

Keep trying... Still has nothing to do with Government, just the same as Dino fuel stations do 😶‍🌫️

Falling into the trap that EV have to be charged every day...

From where we live, I can go down to south coast, up to Dundee. Across to east coast or west coast, there & back Without charging. 🤷‍♀️
    Life in the slow lane
  • If we were so worried about the environment, we wouldn't be buying so much new stuff from China or other places and using very very unfriendly environmental transport systems to aquire shinny new stuff and keep short-term in many cases and then bin it as financially cheapest anywhere in the world as we currently do.

EVs are fine, but a total lack of joined up thinking introducing them, many people only need small range keeping environmental damage low, but because public charging network is problematic and cost is often double petrol or diesel equivalent, it's a problem.

Most new cars are purchased by companies and now we are seeing these 2nd or 3rd hand EVs well in the second hand market, but private buyers aren't so keen, so EV 2nd hand values are dropping like stones and blowing the confidence of private buyers buying new, just look on Autotrader EVs less that 500 miles, thousands of pre-reg EVs being offloaded at 20, 30 & up to 40% off RRP, I feel sensible EVs at 30% below RRP are generally okay on value, remember EVs are cheaper to make than ICE cars.

Now the UK government are possibly pushing PHEVs, the show just gets better, heavy cars going around deciding to use electricity or petrol on price and convenience.

The EV introduction will continue to be a great show for many many years.

Maybe I'll keep my 20 year old reliable petrol car that does 45MPG and costs me so little to operate, unless the government introduced another scrappage scheme and I buy a heavy 400+mile range EV and crush my current car.

Crazy times in which we live.

Happy Xmas time all the same.
