It is IMO greatly overrated. A normal IHD updates electricity usage and power every 10s instead of 60s.IHDs are also better for detecting abnormal usage. The home mini updates every 10 seconds. It's data is available via the Octopus API which is its true value meaning you can have pretty much real time data in home assistant or whatever other tools you use.Far more use for just about anything than an IHD.1 -
What is the point of any of these apps and displays and how does keeping them running save you money ?
After a few days you should know what each of your appliances use each hour
You should know what you are using by your bills if you bother to read them
I had a smart meter fitted on Monday last week, I know how much all my appliances use per hour so I will be giving my IHD to my DIL at the weekend so she can find out what she uses for each appliance.0 -

It is useful in that it can alert me to sudden spikes (handy if I've forgotten to unplug something).
Her courage will change the world.
Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.2 -

The practical use for me is seeing real-time usage without needing to be by the IHD.2

Another benefit for me is that I can see if the smart meter might have stopped communicating. Not long after I got my smart meter, it was a blank IHD that made me check whether meter readings were getting through to the DCC & Octopus - they weren't. The app alongside the mini would also tell me that, but some people can't/don't have the app and this would be ideal for such people
Note, however, there can be times where the IHD is not receiving the usage, but the DCC still is.2 -

I got the existing smart meters updated by Octopus after I moved in only because I wanted an IHD. I had to persuade the engineer on the day to hand one over as he told me Octopus only want people to use the app.
The IHD has never worked. I've been told the meters are probably out of range because they are outside my front door on the ground and I live in a first floor flat.
I have the app but the gas usage charts can be very temperamental and have whole chunks of days missing at least once a month.
The whole smart meter experience has been frustrating and underwhelming.0
