£40k to blow on a car - please help!

One of the things I like about MSE is that it has members from different backgrounds etc I'm not in debt but still enjoy the site. It doesn't matter how much you spend on a car , whether your budget is 40k or £800 but I do remember a Bart simpson thread asking the same question last summer when I had old name. Why ask twice?
The reason I am asking twice is because I got some great advice last time and bought a car on the back of some of what was said in that thread. As I explained in my first post my circumstances have changed and I need a bigger car, so thought I would ask again.
However judging by some of the attitudes in this thread I shouldn't have bothered.
Thanks to everyone who has offered useful advice so far.
And as for the person who thinks I'm squandering money - have a good look at some of the threads on the 'grabbit' forum, where people are prepared to squander their money on absolute tat just because it's 50% off or BOGOF.
Sorry if I've offended people who maybe cant yet afford to spend £40k on a car - that was not my intention.
A combination of hard work and good fortune has put me in the position im in - from my experience the richest people i know are also the most frugal, always looking for a bargain. the people i know who are in the most debt are the ones who buy a £40k car on finance when they cant really afford it. this site is for rich people as much as it is for poor people.0 -

If this really was a money saving site, everyone here would own £50 bangers and do their best to do as much servicing as they can themselves. Truth is most will buy new or never consider spending less than £6k on a second hand one - even if they can't afford it outright and have to make that number double so they can afford it and pay through the nose for however many years.
Unfortunately with the current state of the UK's economy, with minimum wages and inflation+tax being as it is, most people will never in their entire lifetime have £40k to buy a car outright. The poor are getting poorer, the rich are getting richer, the NHS and education systems are collapsing beneath Gordon Brown's feet, and we have a serious immigration problem to deal with. This is why I think it is some people aren't enthralled by the post. That combined with this being a money saving site. Even if a couple earns £60k combined wages, they will spend it on Heinz instead of Smart price, more expensive mortgages and so on (people on high wages will feel poor even when they aren't as it's too easy to spend money) - so may never have £40k in the bank despite their high wages Many people may buy cars at about £12k, but more than 50% will get them on credit and some of those (wouldn't want to hazard a guess) will be up to their ears in debt - and paying through the nose for credit.
Not trying to get at you here, just trying to point out the reality that 99% of the population have to live with. Count yourself lucky you're one of the 1%.0 -

You won't find out unless you get yourself off to the dealers and give it a test drive0 -
I have to say I'm not very clued up on cars - BUT - my friend has the MOST gorgeous Audi S4. It's bright red, big alloys and 2 exhausts. Think it's a 4point something litre engine and it's got leather seats and a dvd player inside. The thing even tells you when it needs a service! (I've got a 2 year old Fiat Panda and it hasn't even got a cigarette lighter!)
There's been some adverts on lately for an Audi R8 (I think) which looks rather impressive - no idea of the price though.
Probably haven't helped you much........Sealed Pot Challenge #817 £50 banked0 -
£40k may be out of many people's reach, but then a house is out of many people's reach - I don't see many complaining that it's tactless having a whole section of the forum devoted to them when so many people cant afford to get one!matched betting: £879.63
