Thanks for all the messages - too many to quote! ;)

<<That's because you needed to have transferred the data to your phone earlier>>
I haven't ever done this but I'm fairly sure that the timeline history used to be visible on my phone

<< Does it work using the Browser on your phone?>>
I use Firefox on my phone .... just tried that and it says "Your browser is no longer supported, please upgrade your browser" then invites me to download Chrome, Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, which is most bizarre as I have GC and FF anyway! I pressed on view timeline anyway (I think it said) and it goes to the timeline website and I can see 'year, month, day' as well as 'Today' but it just spins a circle round and round without getting anywhere!

<<You should have seen messages such as this one: >>
Not seen that and just searched back through my Gmails and ... nothing

<<Important: To turn on backup, auto-delete must be off.>>
Auto Delete is off but when I tap on my profile picture, there is *no* option to select Timeline, so can't follow those steps.

<<Interested in why you have linked to Google India  Are you on holiday there?>>
How bizarre, not sure where that came from (Never been there, have you? ;) Cyprus is my preference!) - I just copied and pasted it from my Chrome Bookmarks on my laptop. I've edited it now to .co.uk but it then always goes on to .com when I click on it!

<<What is underneath the overlay? Click the triangle in the left hand corner to remove the overlay>>
It's just the Maps main page

<<What about Settings? What options are there?>>
I opened 'Maps Activity' and in 'History' under 'today' it says 'viewed your timeline' ...
I tapped on that and .... Timeline opened ... which is a very complex way of doing something!

     :)

    No, haven't visited India.
I guess it's all part of the upcoming changes.

Amusingly, I had an email from Google yesterday ......
    <<J B, here's your new Timeline update
You're receiving this email because you turned on Location History, a Google Account-level setting that creates Timeline, a personal map of your visited places, routes and trips.
You can view, edit and delete this data anytime in Timeline>>

So I tapped on 'explore timeline' below the above message and it just goes to 'Maps' - Doh!
If I do it on my PC it just opens a page asking if I would like to delete my timeline! (I'm out of the UK at the moment so hope it will work when I'm back home)

On maps click on the hamburger (3 lines) on the right hand side. The menu that opens has 'Timeline' ..
Also if you sign into your Google account you can navigate to it there.

Sorry, but if you read back through the five pages of this thread, there are no 'timeline' options anywhere!
There's one in my G account but that just takes me back to the maps page!

Also, on Android, I don't think it's actually possible to uninstall the app, just the updates .... I've tried that once but then it just re-updates itself at the next available opportunity.

    🤷‍♂️

If not already tried.....(Still not reading it all, sorry)   Phone Settings > Location > Location services, Timeline. Maybe something in there will work.
