EDF Sunday Saver

  • I had similar as I hadn't realised there was a fair usage policy so had left it to Sunday to fully charge my EV....but I now understand how the saving each week is calculated and how I can work it by ensuring my EV charges on the overnight rate as much through midnight to 5 am and then by usage between 4-7 will be less than the required rate for that day and if car charges for a full charge that could well see me right for the week if done correctly :-)

    Hello fellow edf friends…

So no beat the peak this year instead we have the Sunday saver.

So my current target is to go from 16.1% peak usage to 9.7%. Anyone have similar?

I’d got it down to target by Wednesday by using pretty much no electric at all during 4-7pm then did a little bit of usage the next few days as it’s not possible to be in darkness etc for all those hours through the week with kids.

However, I’m guessing that as each months target is set on the previous months peak usage that it’ll probably get more difficult to reach as the winter goes on and using less this months will drop the target even lower next month and every month after that.

So my new target for November is to cut form 1.1% to 0.6% - I don't think so.  Will carry on a normal instead and hope for an easier target for December.  8 hours for this Sunday so 22.5 kwh to use but not go over.

The trick is the reduction really has to be based on the day....so lets say you use 50kw on a tuesday, your usage has to be 9.7% of that 50 for the day that makes sense, so for a further example, if you have an EV you can charge overnight and use quite a bit of electricity so when you use your power between 4-7 and has little impact (assuming you are just doing some basics like a light on and TV).  My understanding is that it is set on previous months as well, mine at the moment I think is to go from 10.8 to 6.9%

Do EDF make the calculations available?

I have just been credited about 50 units worth, but no idea what period that is supposed to cover, it is too much for one Sunday and too little for two.

It appear they may have credited me for 2 weeks at the standard day rate rather than my actual day rate which is higher as I am on a two rate tariff.  Obviously if this is the case then it is most definitely not 'free electricity' as per the advertisement.  Can I be bothered to argue?

I think it would be helpful if they provided the dates and units (and rates in your case) they've credited us with.

I qualified for free electricity on 27th October and 3rd November. I received my bill yesterday and was credited with £1.85 which is about 10p more than I calculated I used on 27th October so I'm assuming a full calendar month of Sundays is credited the following month and that I'll see the 3rd of November and any others for November credited in December.

Does anyone know if that's how it works? The EDF website just says "we add a credit for this amount to your account on a monthly basis" which is factually correct but doesn't explain which period they're crediting you for.

Even if it ends up being wrong, they're such small amounts, it's like you said @michaels can I be bothered to argue?

thanks for this - we signed up in November and did great week 1 even surpassing our target and getting 16 hours free electricity. I thought I’d got this in the bag for week 2 as we were away - but no!  despite using 42% less during peak hours due to our absence we could only manage to get 8 hours
The maths just doesn’t add up if we are being compared to the same previous months’s peak hour average baseline?
Is this something they run all year round?
I’ve been with them since May and have never seen these Savers ?

Was the second week in December?  They reduced our target percentage in December because we had achieved lower usage in November so basically it constantly gets harder and harder each month until I guess if you give up and have a poor month then the following month will be easier again....

Edit:  Probably what actually happened is the target is a percentage of total usage - so for example less than 10% of units in peak time

Week 1 when you were there perhaps you used 5 units out of 100 in peak (5%) so met the target
Week 2 when you were away you only used 2 units in the peak, but out of total usage of 10 units so 20% so missed the percentage target.

    Could that be it?

Yes @drdpj that's exactly it thanks. The baseline for us was October for the current month of November. I queried edf again and got this more comprehensive response "You need to shift the energy not stop using the energy. You need to shift the energy from week to week not stop using it all together. Therefore, if you weren't in the property you have not shifted the energy in comparison to the week prior."
So yep, if you're away you're saving nothing to qualify for free electricity.
  • I'm curious if anybody else has an issue with failing to get the Sunday free electricity due to 'smart meter glitches'? Monday through to Friday, no data is available on the Energy Hub. At the weekend I get a text to say that we haven't earnt anything due to a glitch, and then on Monday all the data updates for the previous week. I'm not too fussed, as we were a bit bored of sitting in the dark and waiting until after 7pm to eat but it just seemed a bit of a coincidence that they can repeatedly receive the data only after the calculation deadline.
