  • People in the UK’s definition of a friend is weird. I mean what it’s a one off cost of £15 at most for one time. Yes, if he does it again it would be fair to ask for the money. But one day you might need help from him and hopefully he won’t charge you.
  • Absolutely. If he is a good friend then you only charge him what it costs and tell him that.

  • Impossible to imagine what kind of 'friend' wouldn't offer to pay.

Unfortunately not this time, it's not ideal, but put it down to experience. If he asks again to use the charger, say by all means,  but ( in a nice way)that you will have to charge him.
I got the impression that your friend wasn't trying to get his car charged for nothing, just asking a mate to help out, and just didn't think about the cost.

As an EV owner I always offer to pay for any electricity I use if charging "away from home".  Any "public" charging point is certainly going to require payment; why should a "private" charging point be any different?

Sometimes, e.g. in certain hotels or at holiday venues, clients can charge for free but this benefit should never be assumed to be universal.

To me, the visitor who did not offer to pay is acting extremely selfishly.
  • Been done before.
I was 16 at the time and a chap offered me a lift to work and back in his old ford popular, it was less than 2 miles, but on the way back at the end of the journey, he pulled into a petrol station and told me to fill it up with petrol, expecting me to pay for it too. I said I'll catch the bus as usual from tomorrow, thanks, and left him there, cheeky or what!
  • yes...but next time! If you can show exactly how much elec used in the time it was charging ask for that at least. The App called Co-Charger would allow you to offer it to others locally, at a rate per kw/hr that would bring in income for you! I charge at a friend's on their 12 midnight to 5am Octopus cheap rate. They screen shot elec used and what's app that to me. I pay by BACS and insist on adding a little extra each time as it saves me massively compared to public chargers.
  • Who needs friends like that. Let him go. There are givers and takers in this world, and the takers we can do without.
