Hi NeedtoSortIt just wanted to say I've read this thread and would like to send you many virtual hugs. It's great you have taken control of the situation, the advice you have been given is typical DFW - just amazing. I love this board and even if I don't post on here every day I come and read the posts. SS is right that it is important you stick around and stay with us if you can, the support and advice is second to none and really helps to keep me focused.

Anyway I'm looking forward to your updates.

    hugs

  • Hi Need to Sort It

I must have missed this thread yesterday - my apologies.

You have had some great advice though - the biggest of which is to KEEP POSTING! It really does helo focus the mind!

I noticed you mentioned your kids were sorting out old games and CDs etc for Ebay. That might be a good inroad into telling them a little about te situation. Some of the posters on here have been in similar situations to you, hid it from the kids for years and when they eventually find out they completely suprise us with their ability to adapt and help the situation!

I particularly remember a story about a little boy who helped out bottling up in a pub next door to where he lived. After he found out about debts he started buying bulk packs of coca cola and choc bars from the wholesalers when he went to help sort pub stocks out. He then sold them on for profit at school and gave his mum all the profits towards debt.

    Good luck!

Hi sorry Im late but only just spotted your thread. Earlier you asked about the possibility of a solicitor on legal aid. Have a look at the link below. It is funded for free legal advice and includes a calculator to see if you would qualify for legal aid. Keep your chin up. x x x x x

    Brilliant, thanks penguin
  • Also though just to add that once things have settled down and you have a grip on everything it might be worth telling your kids that things might have to be a bit tight moneywise for a while. Really just because firstly they'll probably notice eventually anyway (and it's a lot less scary if they're told it calmly by you and assured everything is under control) and secondly because it's part of educating them to be smart adults, teaching them about finance. I'm not saying go into a lot of detail, just letting them know that there isn't a lot of money to go around would be enough.

Sorry if I'm poking my nose in :)

Not sticking your nose in at all, and yes, I told them last night we are on a major economy drive, once I have spoken to orange I will tell them the news about their phones, but they are good kids they will understand and its important to know how to look after money so they dont end up like me!!!

    Thanks for your help:cheesy:

Hi and welcome. Stick with us cos there are loads of really clever people who post on this site who can point you in the right direction. As SS said we are not experts (an ex being a has been and a spurt is a drip under pressure), but we have been in debt.
At the risk of sounding rude there is a depression support thread on this site, you may want to pop over there sometime to say hello (but don't forget to come back!)

You dont sound rude at all, its actually really nice that you have taken time to point me in the direction, thank you
  • Good luck with the calls to Orange and the mortgage co. today, do keep us posted won't you :)

    <<hugs>>

Yes I will definitely keep you posted, I started a thread earlier, called Day 2 of dealing with my debt, it has a good progress report already

    Thank you
  • What I would say today (after the fantastic and wonderfully positive start of yesterday) is to take one day at a time.

The reason I say this is if you decide to become part of the furniture of the DFW board (I see myself as an old beaten up leather sofa  ), you'll find it incredibly addictive (I speak from experience) and I know I'm not alone in saying that you find yourself beating yourself up for every 17p spent you feel you 'shouldn't have' or berating yourself for not doing the 15 things on today's debt busting list. Some other DFW'ers end up going away for a few days (I disappeared for a month just over a year ago) because it all gets a bit too much, although most re-appear a few days later feeling refreshed and re-motivated after a little break.

I guess what I'm trying to say in a very long winded way is just pootle along doing what you can, when you can. If a debt busting type 'task' doesn't get done today, so be it. There's always tomorrow ;)

  • Thanks for that Keren, so far I feel like I need to be here, the threads I have posted in so far always open so I can just quickly get things off my chest, its therapeutic and I feel like there's someone there, daft really isnt it.
  • Hi need to sort it out, why not keep posting on this thread? It can be really inspirational for new folk coming along to follow someone's story from start to end .... and selfishly I sometimes miss new threads and I want to hear how you're getting on.... hope today went well...

It's not daft at all hun because there are always people there. Doesn't matter how small or big the problem, people are always there at least for just a shoulder. :)

Can I just say that you have done pucker (my way of saying brilliant) today. :T You are taking back control already. I know your debt is more than you thought but it doesn't really matter. You now know what you are dealing with and you are dealing it!
