*Edited as got dates mixed up*
Sunday 1st- NSD
Monday 2nd- NSD
Tuesday 3rd- NSD
Wedneday 4th-NSD
Thursday 5th- NSD. I did do the weekly grocery shopping but I categorise this as Essential Spending, so it doesn't count.
Friday 6th- Spend Day, buying a few things my son needs for university.
Saturday- NSD. I did have to pay for fuel and ULEZ to drop my son off but as this was an Essential Trip, with no option for using other forms of transport, this doesn't count.
Sunday- NSD. We had planned to go for a day hike, stopping off for lunch and a pint or two at a lovely country pub but the weather had other ideas. Stayed in and played board games with a glass of wine and veggie sausage sandwiches instead.
That evening, as I was heading for bed I noticed the hall carpet felt wet. After a mad few minutes I managed to find the source- something in the downstairs bathroom was leaking.
Turned off the stopcock, but it was still leaking
I had to take a crowbar to the panelling to find the reason......
The inlet pipe that brings water from the main supply to our house had corroded and developed a tiny hole just before it meets with the stopcock.
My partner is lovely, but bloody useless when it comes to anything practical. So there I am, 11 o'clock at night, wearing my most unfetching Snoopy pyjamas, lying on the wet street outside our house with my arm down the access hatch, turning off the main water supply.
My partner was panicking, thinking we had to call an emergency plumber. I told him to turn on all the cold taps, fill as many pans and buckets as he could and drain the system.
Ten minutes after discovering the leak, the water had stopped. Another 15 minutes of mopping up and putting down towels to soak up any residue and the panic was over. I could get out of my dirty, wet jim-jams, have a good wash and go to bed knowing that disaster was averted. I could deal with the repair job in the morning.
Monday- Big Spend Day. I inspected the pipe, googled the problem and quickly realised that this was a job best left to the experts. Called my friendly, neighbourhood plumber.
He came around first thing this morning and after an hour of ripping out fitted wall panels (ouch!) he'd removed the damaged pipe. It was so badly corroded it could have completely split at any moment. After an hour of serious banging, sawing and welding he'd fitted a new pipe and stopcock.
£160 😭
I'm trying to tell myself that it could have been so much worse, that if I had panicked or didn't know what to do we might have ended up calling an emergency plumber. Or worse still, we could have been away when it completely ruptured and returned to find out home destroyed.
I'll have to replace the wall panels, but it's not urgent. Having all the pipes on display is not pretty, but I can live with it for a while.
I'll also need to replace the bathroom flooring. It had to be cut away in order to rip out the wall panels.
Me and my bank balance feel a bit sad today 😢2 -
