Its advisable not to use cruise in variable limits when they are operating for this exact reason.  Mind off the speed limit sign which is different to the previous one, car continues.

If cruise was set to 59mph what speed were you recorded at on the ticket?

59 which I keep it at to make sure I'm not over the 60. I'm not going to slam on the brakes and drop 10mph immediately, I'll move over when safe to do so and slow down. Remember not all traffic follows the rules so if there's someone behind not paying attention it's easy to case an accident. Always done this and never had a problem before. Safety first.
Just lifting off would have dropped that in no time. So no need to slam on the brakes 🤷‍♀️
As to a accident. That is not your worry, if you get hit from behind that is their fault.
Sadly "not all traffic follows the rules" is shooting yourself in the foot..

First off you must respond to the NIP with the driver’s details, failure to do so will get you 6 points and a hefty increase in your insurance premiums for failing to identify the driver. For the speed you were doing you will be offered a speed awareness course.

The best place to post regards motoring offences is over on the FTLA forum, but I don’t think the advice you will get is to take the course.

Why do you think they would advise not to take the course?  Or do you think the OP has a good defence?

Depends on the cruise control, the one on my car detects speed limit signs and on a change prompts me to change to the new limit via the HUD.

My car doesn't but satnav does and didn't alert me or prompt me to, although not using that as an excuse. Just the fact that by the time I'd seen the sign and was in the process of slowing I could see the next set to 60 so never made it down. Got tagged somewhere in between.
As you seem to be responding to a post about cruise control alerting the driver to changes in speed limit, are you saying that your cruise control doesn't, but that your satnav does?

I don't use satnav and know very little about it, but is it possible for satnav to alert the driver to real time changes in variable speed limits?

Particularly when variable limits are operating I think it's pretty daft to rely on anything other than your own eyesight to keep within the limit.  I wouldn't trust technology.

The photos you will have seen are basically just to show you that it was your car.  I've no doubt they will have other photos that show you passing a 50 limit at 59 or whatever.

If they offer you a course I'd take it.  If you accept it was your car you can't really challenge it without getting prosecuted in court.  And then it starts to get expensive...

Driving without due care and attention is hard to defend.
What is the relevance? The alleged offence is speeding, not DWDC.
Merely making an observation. Drivers becoming dependent on their vehicle rather than being in full control is becoming an increasing issue it seems.
  • Too many people slow down slowly when limits charge. You need to throw out the anchor and get under the limit before reaching the gantry. Beware of people not paying attention who might not brake in time.

Are you saying that the speed limit on one sign changed from 60 to 50 or are you saying that one sign was 60 and the next sign was 50?

The latter, is my interpretation. Not really sure what the issue is or why "slamming on the brakes" would be necessary? Isn't the normal limit for enforcement purposes 57mph? So brake from 59 to 56...
