Just curious - who's the victim in this scenario?

... The long and the short of it is I made a stupid error - better to come clean I think!
    My wife's a solicitor.

She says never admit to anything!

That doesn't help if you refuse to admit your're guilty when you are.  You risk a bigger fine, court costs and victim surcharge fees.
It was a joke - hence the exclamation mark - in response to TooManyPoints admitting he'd made a mistake and "had better come clean"...

    Poe's Law.

I don't think toomanypoints is the OP, it's getting a bit confusing...

I started the confusion by suggesting that the OP had 14 days to respond to the request for driver's details, when of course it is 28 days.

Then that mistake from me became confused with the mistake from the OP (speeding in a variable limit). And it went from there.

So that's cleared that up then - I think!    :)

"Victim Surcharge" is levied upon conviction & sentencing of any offence by a Court.
The collected money is used to fund victim support groups in general, it does not go to victims of that particular crime (that is what compensation is for if awarded)

It is effectively a tax on crime - on getting caught anyway ;). (Presumably "Victim Surcharge"  is more palatable than "Crime Tax" :) )

I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

Where do you get "double the penalty"? Are you thinking about council civil penalties rather than the OP's (alleged) criminal offence?
It's this ridiculous 50% discount if paid within 14/28 days. It's not a discount, they double the fine if not paid promptly.
They don't do that with your gas/electric bills ect. because it would be unfair to those who live paycheck to paycheck and others who miss the letters.

As I said in my post yesterday, that does not apply to criminal matters such as speeding. As Car_54 says, you are probably thinking of civil matters such as parking. This thread is about a speeding allegation.

So it is about council civil penalties, and absolutely nothing to do with the OP's predicament, or this thread.

There is no need to throw anchor out. You see gantry & lift off the throttle, engine breaking will reduce speed by more than enough for10 mph
Maybe for a ICE but an EV may not do that the same way.

I have a mild hybrid - taking one's foot off the accelerator does not noticeably slow it down at all.
On the contrary, the engine stops, disconnects, goes into 'ready' mode, and the car rolls on.
It needs another conscious action from the driver to have any effect on forward motion.
