    Ofgem

    Our back billing rules

These rules set out when a supplier can charge you for any shortfalls in payment for energy you’ve used.

You cannot be charged for energy used more than 12 months ago if:

you have not had an accurate bill for it before, even though you asked for one

you have not been informed about any charges due via a statement of account before

your Direct Debit amount was previously set too low to cover any charges due

Suppliers must make these rules clear in their contract terms and conditions.

The rules apply to domestic energy consumers and microbusinesses.

It should be in the suppliers contract that was agreed with their customer.

I have to disagree , Tomato were just too good to be true and so it turned out unfortunately. I don't know many people that were not trying to save money back when Tomato came to fruition (fruitition if you don't mind the pun) and now but a lot of people held back.

Out of interest why did you join tomato was it a friend or family or perhaps social media?

With regards your final bill, it is advised here that we all record what energy we use and if, as is the case with Tomato, billing was sporadic or non existent, then put that money aside from your kWh used (for when the debt gets called in)

Some Tomato customers were under the illusion that because the CEO said that if they did not received a bil for 12 months that they wouldn't have to pay that, sadly the word over a CEO over the terms and conditions of what happens when a supplier goes bust and SOLR selected means nothing. The energy that Tomato supplied has to be paid for.

Worse of all, those that held back and though tomato were full of it, once all the check and measures have been handled and the shortfall is known we all have to pay for that through our standing charge.

I like everyone else got dumped into British gas and left straight away. They sent me two final bills in January after I pointed out the first one was just standing charge. They have just sent another final bill today saying the second one wasn't correct. I asked them on their online chat ( which claimed to be human - my !!!!!!!) and they said I wasn't eligible for compensation because the the ( second) original bill was wrong. They offered to right off the 12 odd quid. Plus £10 good will. Then said I could complain but I wouldn't get the £10 then it was £17.50 then £40 was too much did I have a number in mind £25-£35. I said I'd wait for them to get back to me about the complaint and asked if I pay the bill as it has a time limit. They said I didn't have to pay because they ha written it off. But they haven't. What exactly am I entitled to or were they right, it is nothing?

Like any invoice, they are permitted to correct a mistake and that would not in itself entitle you to compensation as the original invoice was issued within the allowed time.

If you just got a bill from BG then the ones in Jan can't now be a final bill, it's only possible to have one final bill (for each product) as previous bills by definition can't be final.

Well this is the 3rd final bill I've had from them. I was only with them for six days and had more days trying to deal with them. Wouldn't surprise me if they could get away with sending me out final bills when ever they felt like it. The older I get the more it becomes apparent, that what ever protections the general public have',thems what rule us' have endless loopholes to use to get out of it if they so wish.

But surely @Bobohead you have your start and end readings for those 6 days so you will know how much to put aside whilst this is all sorted out?

I don't mind paying my bill. In fact I thought I had in January ( my second final bill! )and was very glad to be having nothing more to do with British gas. However six months later my third final bill arrives. As for the final reading, I gave the reading to the new supplier and as I understand it, it gets independently verified and given to British gas. However on the British gas website my final reading has a decimal point in it, which I don't understand. My smart meter certainly doesn't have a decimal. All I want to do is pay my electric bills and then get on with my life and not be constantly dicked about. Once upon a time that seemed to be a thing.
