I think this is going to be interesting but not in a happy way.  Sounds like Tomato ignore industry reads - so can't see the administrators doing any better.  I haven't quite figured out the scenarios for winners / losers but it is probably fair to say there may be a few days where your BG bill is based on industry figures for your property not actual reads and no corrective action is taken by the loosing supplier (administrator) to issue a final bill based on industry agreed reads - sensible thing is to take regular manual reads yourself in case of a dispute. If past history is anything to go by - then administrators can take a while to get these bills sent out and then are not around to handle queries preferring to 'sell the debt' to collection agencies.

Yes, I can also confirm that when I left at the beginning of June I just got a bill based on HH consumption like normal, so it's likely their systems don't do any sort of reconciliation. In any case my opening read was higher than my closing read by over 1000 kWh due to them messing up the opening read.

Final meter reading requested but meter number looks nothing like a number starting from 1:

    Enter Meter number

Read the first digits from left to right, ignoring the numbers in red.

    1

  • I'm guessing the 1 may relate to the fact you only have one meter (not a second or dual meter). I see the same if I click on the link in my email (which also arrived this morning); on MyWatts (website, not the App, which seems mostly to have stopped working for me) the Meter Read doesn't show a leading 1, just the five boxes to insert 5 numbers...

apparently some customers have been asked for 2 readings, presumably 1, 2 .. this is an issue if they only have one register in use, which seems to be the case for many, tomato having run 2 tier tariffs on hh data using just r1. I guess you just report 2 as 0.

I have an ombudsman decision against Tomato Energy, they have failed to implement all of  the remedy's ordered by the ombudsman by the deadline which was almost 2 weeks ago.

They have overcharged me and have been ordered to recalculate my bills and issue a letter of apology, although they have paid me a goodwill payment for other matters.

As Tomato Energy are likely to appoint administrators on/after Friday, are the remedy's ordered by the ombudsman binding on administrators or not?

As they have overcharged me can I refuse to pay my final bill with them and then argue with the administrator?

I’d hazard a guess that any overpayment will be safe, because of the Ofgem protection, but not any compensation. The administrator has an obligation to pay only what’s legally required to be paid, and since there’s no legal requirement for a company to comply with an Ombudsman decision it’s possible that it won’t be paid.

I am not sure if Ofgem protections will mean anything in the hand of the administrators, I am treating my £80 compensation as lost at this point even though its a mandated Ofgem protection.  Customers owed money if I am right are just low priority creditors.

I just looked in the Meter Readings section of the Mywatts App.

I jumped as soon as I saw the First Notice of Intention to appoint an administrator.  On changeover day I submitted a reading, which is on Mywatts (and taken by the new supplier).  I have a more recent November reading on there which is 56kWh lower than the reading I submitted!

When you switch the industry body that sits in between the losing and gaining suppliers can alter the meter reading and then both suppliers have to use the altered reading for their opening/closing readings.

I switched at the same time in mid October and MyWatts has generated it's own reading for 2nd November, coincidentally the date they sent the October bill.

    Tomato opening read: 4902
Total kWh Tomato have billed for: 640
Opening read to new supplier 17 Oct: 5552
    MyWatts read 02 Nov: 5542

Tomato billed on half hour consumption data, not meter reads. I suspect the meter reads in MyWatts aren't actually reads, but just a cumulative total of use based on the monthly bills.

That MyWatts meter read on 2nd November is "correct" to reconcile their billing.  But the meter didn't read that on 2nd November and they've lost 10kWh over 11 months!

    When Tomato's email asks for:
To ensure accurate final billing please enter your meter reading through myWatts app or portal, or by clicking the button below:
Do they expect current reading? Or from a week ago?

Anyway, can't either side of the deal just upload data from smart meters?
