Pay per mile

Road pricing has been implemented in a number of places world-wide. The technology will allow different prices at different times (so perhaps discouraging driving at peak hours and encouraging use of public transport) and different prices for different vehicles. Transponders in the vehicle are a way forward, as seen on many European motorways. In terms of raising revenue, fuel duty or road pricing seem to be fairer than VED in that the bigger users would pay more. Fuel duty and VED can discourage the use of vehicles with high emissions. As for blue badge exemptions, presumably that would be decided by Parliament at the time; all sorts of permutations are possible.0

Adding it to fuel would not solve the problem of EVs on the whole causing more damage to roads than normal personal vehicles.

High time there was some form of fuel duty or mileage duty for EVs. Why should the rest of us subsidise them?1

The report I read just suggested that drivers would log their mileage every x weeks. It’s only dynamic pricing that would need a black box; a flat 5p/mile is very easy to implement.1

Why don't they just tax the electricity?Smart chargers snitch on you already, it would be trivial to levy a 25p a kWh tax on the electricity used to charge an EV.You could get round it by plugging into a 13A socket, but it would take a couple of days to charge rather than a couple of hours.I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

Unless you're planning to tax by the amount of sunshine?0 -

Unless you're planning to tax by the amount of sunshine?I know next to nothing about EV chargers, but aren't the ones that use solar/grid smart too? Then "they" can actually tax sunshine- the air you breathe next!Plus heavy users charge overnight so the smart charger can cut in when Octopus are knocking the electricity out very cheap.I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....
