How would road pricing actually work ?
I assume that it would involve every vehicle being fitted with a black box ?
What about blue badge disabled drivers - would we still be exempt ?
If I was half as smart as I think I am - I'd be twice as smart as I REALLY am.

Any article that starts "Labour could be planning" that also contains lines like "Reports now suggest" needs to be taken with more than a pinch of salt.
I guess there could be many ways of it working in practice, but all would be very difficult/expensive/met with extreme friction.8 -
A major road on the Algarve has road tolls. It would be very straightforward to implement here on certain roads. Transponders in each vehicle, transponders on overhead gantries and signage. All motorways for example.Mortgage free

It would be good if it worked, but it would be a bureaucratic nightmare. Getting rid of the unfair clean air zones would be great.Just increase the tax on electricity generated using fossil fuels, to offset the tax revenue lost by banning the combustion engine.0

If the problem that you are trying to fix is falling Vehicle Excise Duty due to electric cars, the answer would seem to be to increase VED rates for non-electric vehicles, and introduce a small charge for electric vehicles, e.g. £30.
The problems of implementing road pricing would be extensive. People who avoid paying VED currently will also try to avoid road pricing, so some new laws will be needed. The might need to be changes to the MOT process to check that road usage is being correctly recorded or can be correctly recorded.
I expect that most of the existing exemptions from VED, including those for the disabled, would continue. However, to raise more money some exemptions such as those for electric vehicles might have to end.The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.1 -

The Government needs an alternative revenue because of electric vehicles.I cannot see the government getting rid of a yearly tax on vehicles which is already in place.0

By the time we get to 2035, UK should be running the vast majority of time on renewables. Given there are several days a year already then this happens.Life in the slow lane0 -
All Blue Badge holders are not exempt.
I'm not disabled enough.
What about driving outside the UK.
I drive about 3000 miles a year in the UK but approx 12000 miles in mainland Europe - I spent 5 months outside the UK last year - how are they going to take that into account.2
