I'm not as keen on this scheme as evening saver sessions. If you can shift usage to 1-2pm that you'd be using that day anyway then fine, but using more energy just for the sake of it isn't a good thing, and if you end up using more but still less than the unknown 'usual' amount then it'll end up costing more too. Rewards for using less energy on the other hand are good, and it seems easier to shift normal evening usage away by an hour or so.
There is no incentive to waste energy like there was for the saving sessions. The best returns on those involved using more energy overall, but none during the session. For these free electricity sessions, it is best to use less overall and more during the session, but no more than you can use usefully.
You can calculate your 'usual' amount in the same way as you could for the saving sessions.
It isn't an either/or proposition. You can participate in either or both.
  • Sorry - not read whole thread.  Sorry for rant - you don't have to read and you prob don't know the answer.

I DO have SM2 but it is not communicating every 30 mins - though I think Octopus can pull the data intermittantly.

I really feel such a 2nd class citizen as I have done everything 'right' (and I am in contact with octopus for a TR3 improved hub) but I feel that I and the 4million others are so disadvantaged by a failed comms strategy - was it Gov led?

I have absolutely no complaints towards Octopus - theyhave done their very best, but why oh why cannot I use my FTTP internet connnection for these SM2s to be read automatically?

It was led by Ed miliband who is now back as energy secretary I think so write to him.

Also that 4 million does not mean they have issue like you and most are just in home displays not working. However it is nasty when your sm2 meter does not communicate fully.

If you can persuade Octopus to manually pull the data a couple of days after the session, then you might be able to get what you are owed. Otherwise, the terms suggest you would be credited with the average free electricity given to participants, which means you can benefit without actively participating, which is better than nothing.
As for the reason smart meters must use the dedicated cellular network, this was for security reasons, but there are technological solutions that could be leveraged to make use of home WiFi, so schemes like the Octopus Home Mini could eventually help people like you.

@MarzipanCrumble I had a smart meter installed as an Octopus customer and it doesn't work as no signal here at all. They couldn't even complete the set up as it requires a connection to do so. It is just gathering dust and I submit manual readings from the regular meter by the consumer unit as before.
Reading the terms of the free energy events I have still signed up and been accepted. They have promised people in our situation we will be reimbursed the average additional use.
Best wins; GoPro, £2K, Brittany week, festival tix twice, Bath break, Sweden spa break, iPhone x2, £250 Amazon x2, tech bundle, 55" TV, Haven break, £1K, Smeg mixer, 3 night spa break, Greenhouse, posh tent, house plants, 2 pairs boots, posh mattress, year tailored supps, £250 lingerie, £150 buyagift, £250 hotel

So what you call the regular meter is infact the smart meter, the thing gathering dust is the IHD (in home display)

I put our oven on for a self-clean for the very first time ever during the 1 hour slot - I just wanted to see whether it really worked. Answer: kind of.

But, my wife had put the EV on to charge, and we got an Intelligent Octopus Go smart charge over the same hour period.

I presume their reconciliation will know to credit at 7p and not a the SVT rate.
How did you find out already that you got an intelligent 🐙 smart charge for that period?
Via the Octopus app after you plug you're car in.

We made decent use of yesterday's slot with a load of washing, the dishwasher put on, the oven on for an hour to bake a batch of rolls, some scones and some muffins, and the hob in use to stew a bit panful of apples we were given. All of those things would have been done at some stage yesterday or today, but we actively load shifted them to that (slightly manic, with all that going on, it must be said!) hour instead. I reckon we should get about 2kWh credited back, which is pretty much our full use during that hour (as we would usually be low users during that timeslot) so I'm pretty happy with that!

It looks like we used just over 6kWh between 1 and 2 instead of our usual 0.5! It was a very productive hour!!🤣
