I have just received a very curious email from Virgin Money. I will post in full just to share the bizarre content.

    From hellob@cygb.com

    Good morning RG2015,
We recently received an online request to close your savings account, unfortunately we are unable to action this request at the moment due to the account having a credit balance.
Please transfer all the money in your account to bring the balance to 0.
Once the funds have been removed you can request the closure in store, in writing or over the phone.
    Kind Regards
    Virgin Money Admin Team

Even if I transferred the balance, there would still be the £26 interest to transfer. And why else would they ask for an account to transfer the balance to?
Been quite a few posts about this over the past week. Virgin's system is a bit rubbish for savings closures apparently. VM's website does suggest that all account types must have a zero balance before closure.

When an account with a zero balance is closed they then need the account details of where to send your interest. I know it's annoying but that's their system.

I don't have Virgin Money account myself but after some hunting I came across this at the following link (Questions and answers | Savings | Virgin Money UK) on how to close a savings account.

Though to be honest this may only be for withdrawals (again their website doesn't really help much).

Just received my interest £26.11 (requested via online form 01 August 12:43 and by phone call to CSA 06 August 15:00) noting I withdrew balance on 30 and 31 July. Transaction shows as 'Branch'.

I also received £50 following my complaint of 06 August (same call to CSA), upheld following discussion with complaint handler who called me 07 August 15:30. I suspect it's £25 a reason for poor service/advice.

One good reason for them to insist the account is emptied before closure is that the account closure form can be submitted anonymously, so anyone with your details could request it at any time.

Yes, good point. But it amazes me that VM can have an account closing process that does not require ID verification.

And this account has £26 accrued interest so emptying the account could still result in a fraudster getting that money.

Still waiting for the account closure and interest I requested on 1st August.

Just to add insult to injury my wife has been getting the run around opening up their new RS. It keeps telling her to phone and confirm her middle name, as it just shows her initial on the account. She did that and the agent told her it was easier for him to just remove the initial and then she could apply online in 5 minutes. An hour later it still kept telling her to phone, so she got an agent on livechat. He told her just to apply for the account on the phone, but said he could see she had been emailed a link to upload id (no link has been received). Then he cut her off while she was replying.

She got back on live chat to complain and another agent said my wife could either upload via the link she hadn't been sent or go into a branch with id. My wife explained she had no link, then the agent decided there was no such link. She also said you couldn't verify your middle name on the phone despite the online form telling her to do so!😂
