You only offered your elder son £1k because the younger son wanted a puppy.
After a lot of effort the younger son changed his mind without a care for the consequenses.
The elder son will now miss out.
No prizes for guessing which son is the favourite!

So you put your dog through a pregnancy and motherhood to give your son a puppy?  And to make a shed load of money.  Well I’ve heard it all now!  Did you get your mum dog tested for hip dysplasia and eye disorders before mating her, which Labradors are prone to?  That’s what good breeders do.  You do realise a Labrador is a retriever don’t you?  People breeding dogs without even knowing the correct breed name is  just odd.  There are several types of  retrievers - Labrador, Golden, Flat Coat and Chesapeake, may be more.  I think you and your son deserve each other.

Please, please, please don't breed animals we enough in shelters waiting for homes as it is :(
  • It’s a dog. There are plenty of unwanted dogs with the RSPCA. Tell him to get his own dog, and keep the money and go on holiday. You deserve it after uch agonising decisions.
  • Just as well your younger son and girlfriend didn't announce they wanted a baby - Mum might have been very surprised at the suggested course of action!

As far as the money is concerned, one son was offered £1,000 and the other son a puppy. Where's the problem? One son has declined his gift but I bet the other one won't. So yes, give the money you promised
As for breeding your dog just so that you could gift a puppy to someone who doesn't deserve it, that's reprehensible. Find good loving homes for each pup and let them go for whatever a decent, proper dog lover can afford

I feel quite sorry for whoever the original poster is in this. I'm aware that MSE does not give the full details. Years ago the actual person behind the MMD came forward and explained what had happened. The truth may be that they are dog breeders and haven't randomly decided to breed their pet dog for the sole purpose of providing one of their sons with a puppy. And yes I did try a shelter when we wanted a dog, several in fact and we couldn't be matched to one. We ended up with a pup and for a long time I felt bad about it until my friend went through the same experience as we had and she's a Vet!

I really can't see what these MMDs offer (apart from bringing new users to the website).

I too have read an original MMD submitted to MSE and the 'slimmed down' MMD posted by MSE Kelvin was .
    laughable.
MSE - please don't post MMDs that are contentious when you say they are meant to be taken at face value and ask posters to be 'kind'.
MSE members - if you you really want advice on a situation, please post the whole story.
    Don't submit a MMD.
