Money Moral Dilemma: Should we still give our son £1,000 instead of a puppy?

  • I'm with your wife. You agreed to breed from your own dog presumably because that would provide your son with the pet he (apparently) wanted at little cost to him or you and (maybe) that the temperament would be known. You were always likely to end up with more than one puppy and given your other son didn't want a dog  you have indicated that you intended to sell any others for a significant fee.  I don't even begin to understand why you offered the other son the 'cash equivalent' in the first place (its not as if you were buying the dog for the first one) and now that the wannabe dog owner has changed his mind you should leave him to his own devices.  Dog ownership is not a game - it';s a responsibility and he might take it more seriously if he has to pay for it in the first place (long term ownership costs will far outweigh the purchase cost).  Sell the puppies (unless YOU wan to keep one) and use the money on yourselves.  We are breeding (pun intended) a generation who expect everything on a plate.

I’m just really concerned about the fact that your son said he wanted a puppy so you bred even more dogs that were not necessary and then he changed his mind. There are so many unwanted and abandoned dogs out there in shelters needing their forever homes and this has just added to this problem. Your son is clearly not responsible enough to own a dog if he changes his mind so quickly. Give your son his promised cash and show the potential dog owner how difficult it is to care for a dog by sending him to some classes first, so there are no further dogs sent for re-homing.  This post had left me really sad as we always go to rescue centres for our forever friends, not breed more unwanted puppies. 🦮🐾😢

Astonishing. You haven't disclosed the ages of your sons, but I think the younger son needs a good talking to. That's about as polite as I can put it.

I've only read the replies on the first page.

100% agree with these comments ^^^

The youngest son is irresponsible and I would question his ability and commitment to care for a pet, especially one that will need intensive training for many months and love & attention for many years.
A dog is not a toy to change your mind over.

What a morally reprehensible family.  Some people shouldn't breed dogs or children.

Just about sums it up for me.

I do think some people on here need to step back and take a good look at themselves.
What happened to not being rude to moneysavers?

Regardless on your views on breeding vs rescue (and FWIW I have always rescued but have no issue with responsible breeding) there is no evidence that the person asking the question has mistreated their animals or done anything to cause them harm.

The responses that their dogs should be removed, that they should be banned from keeping animals, that they should be fined and that they shouldn't have been allowed to have children are quite simply ludicrous.
The OP has not broken any laws and may or may not have carried out all the relevant health checks - we simply don't know.

There are far worse things that happen to animals every day. If it mithers you that much then step away from being a keyboard warrier and get involved in lobbying your MP/the kennel club etc for change to puppy farms which cause far more damage.  Instead of jumping on the bashing people bandwagon.

I have no issue with the originator of the MMD.
But I do with the behaviour of the youngest son.
I do think he is irresponsible and question his commitment to a pet.
He has changed his mind between breeds in what is probably a relatively short time.

In my early married days I would have loved to have a dog.
But I knew that I couldn't have given a dog it's best life because we were both out at work all day so we had cats (all kittens).
I put the needs of any dog I might have had before my wants.

Kittens:1 from a friend of the OH, the 2nd from RSPCA, the 3rd from the first place (last of the litter who was going to be drowned if we didn't take him, 4th picked up from an industrial site seriously ill, the 5th from a friend who no longer wanted him, the last from a farm because RSPCA wanted us to take 2 and Cats Protection refused us as we were both at work.
That kitten was only 5 weeks old (he was the alpha male of the litter so was big), had cat flu & pneumonia, wasn't expected to live and cost us hundreds of £s in his first 2 weeks (25 years ago).

I would love another cat but as we holiday a lot, I just can't take a rescue cat and then put him into a cattery for 8-10 weeks a year.
That is how people should care for animals.

I do question the wisdom of breeding with a !!!!!! simply to satisfy a 'want'.
    But that's not my business.

The youngest son is old enough to have a girlfriend so I don't know why the originator of this MMD decided to fund his desire to have a dog and reward the eldest son by giving him the cash equivalent.

As you know, we see many threads on here about adult children being spoiled by their parents.
    This sounds like that.
But that is only my opinion.
  • I don’t get this, your dog had puppies, one son wanted one & one didn’t- why do you need to compensate the son who didn’t want one?

It is illegal in one of the Nordic countries (forget which) to sell a dog for over £500. They virtually stopped dog thefts and puppy farming. Please campaign for the same in UK. It's such a simple idea.

  • Breeding dogs for financial gain is cruel and unnecessary. Encourage them to adopt.
