My turn to ask a ?

Looking at booking the Signature for the last 3 nights of my stay in March for $199 a night plus tax plus resort fee......Is it really worth it, as anyone who is a regular on here knows, I like to do things on the cheap, rarely have I paid more than $100 a night.

    I hate spending money :rotfl:

I know a few on here have stayed there, I am happy normally with likes of PH, Paris, flamingo....all for much much less

Is that rate through the deal Trets posted? I was looking at a night there for our stay in March - to try it out as we can get ...but a bit torn as I don't like MGMs casino really and if we can get a good deal at Wynn for a night would probably go back there.

As for whether it's worth it - it's all relative really...before we had our really cheap night at Wynn we never thought we would have paid to stay there when we could get rooms at Bally's for free. Now we're not so sure. I still don't think we would splash out for 8-9 nights at Wynn, even at a good rate, but could justify a night or two there as a treat as it is really so very nice - would imagine the same would be said for Signature...we're probably like you - we're completely happy at a lesser hotel - without question...but on occasion it's nice to try something different. But I can see why it wouldn't be worth the extra cost to some. Just really depends on what has value to you.

FWIW - I didn't feel the same about Bellagio - were it not for the fountain view, to us it wouldn't have been worth the cost...the view made the room for us and without the view (even at the lower rate for a non-view room) it wouldn't have been worth it to us.

    So it's all very relative.

Not sure if trets posted the signature deal..I am constantly checking vegas promotions...vegas hotels online..fatwallet etc.

Does the signature have its own casino or do you use MGM, if so isnt that a bit of a trek across the road (for a lazy !!!!!! like me)

No casino, and completly non-smoking. 5 minute walk from tower 1 to back of MGM via moving walkway. Good location for the strip as it happpens, if you go out of the main entrance and head up Harmon? you are only 5 minute walk or so to PlanetHo. Be aware that there is a $15 per day charge on all room rates for internet , paper, use of the gym (why would you want that!)) AND WATER!!
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

    Quote from trets
"if you really want to try poker take a crash course in reading up on the game and tatics ect. i can recommend some books if you like , and get playing on the net in $5 sit and gos .( i play on Partypoker these days)"...

Hey trets - so - you are a poker player;) - question - have you ever played in the WSOP? My other half did in the main event 2005 and 2007 - first time out in day one, second finished just before the money started day three(bummer!) but absolutely unbelievable experiences - the big names and celebrities that you walk past or bump into is unreal! (Met Ben Afflek, Matt Damon, James Woods - even spoke to T J Cloutier which was an experience as that the book thats been read most in our house!!).

We have decided to go this year even if he doesnt qualify via a poker site (eek) so potentially we have to pay for everything ourselves.... (hmmmm) Direct BMI flights are already booked (£820), so we know when we are going - now need to sort accommodation.

Second question - Last two times in Vegas we stayed at Wynn (fantastic but then we didnt have to pay!) and Rio (where wsop is held) and despite the bad reviews that the Rio sometimes gets on tripadvisor I was quite impressed really. The ONLY THING IS to stay at the Rio for two weeks over wsop is currently coming out at £1467 via cityandshow for 29/06/08-13/07/08 (can get £80 back via Quidco) but this is still way too pricey and is the cheapest that I can find at the mo.
In your experience will the hotel release deals to beat this at some stage before June/July? (never having paid for them myself before I was quite shocked at the prices...).

I have started looking at much cheaper options and not sure if anyone here has any experience with any of the following, but these are do-able in terms of price:-

Desert Rose (can walk to strip I am told..) approx £652 for same dates and tripadvisor rates them at number 39

Southpoint (bit too far I think) approx £600 for same dates and they are suprisingly rated number 6 at tripadvisor...

Tuscany Suites £582 - think I have talked myself out of this already... but this is rated number 54 in tripadvisor...

We have experienced the central buzz of staying on the strip and I dont think I will be too disappointed not being in the heart of Vegas - in fact, one of the reasons that I liked the Rio was that its not THAT busy (even though there are literally thousands of people there to play poker) the likes of MGM and Mandalay Bay drove me mad for crowds and queueing - any suggestions / advice from anyone would be gratefully received.....

(By the way - my price investigations are still in the first stages so dont be too harsh with me!).
Thanks in advance for anyones suggestions...

I haven't been over that period so cannot help with what to expect in terms of hotel rates, other than to say that looking at the Rio's website you could get the room about the same or a bit less as cityandshow is quoting - would almost always say booking direct is the way to go.

but wanted to say that I would not give a lot of thought to the trip advisor rankings as they're a bit relative. Hotels like SouthPoint (at no 6) are high up the list - but check how many ratings they have vs some of the strip properties...usually far, far fewer ratings...I think tripadvisor is great but only for reading many individual travellers reviews about a particular property as you can dismiss those who obviously just have a chip on their shoulder over something petty and focus on the more objective reviews...in some cases the rankings are kind of ridiculous if you really look at them as compared to other properties.

As for Desert Rose, had never even heard of it but looks like it's condo-style apartments...apparently adjacent to Hooters...Personally I'm not very fond of the area myself, and as there's no casino, there's no chance of comps or poker rate on the room I wouldn't think...as it sounds like you are gamblers, seems to make more sense to stay somewhere with a casino and where you might get something knocked off the room.

Maybe consider Orleans (They're 17 at tripadvisor)...I think I've read that they have a good poker room but others will know more than me...free shuttle to the strip and lower than strip prices...plenty to do on site as well.

Hi, I managed to get lucky on the Delta deal yesterday and have blagged return flights from LGW to LV for £236 with taxes included for a week over Easter, superb price.

I've not been to Vegas since 1995 and am looking forward to see how the place has changed since then. Last time I just had a room at the Hilton however this year has one of the major birthdays (one that ends in a 0) in it so I am looking to treat the gf to a suite on the strip.

Does anyone have any recommendations, I'm not looking for top of the range suites, more the 600ft - 800ft range. I've got Mandalay Bay and the MGM Signature on the radar at the moment.

    Thx

when you say Mandalay bay i assume you also mean THE HOTEL @ Mandalay Bay as well. all rooms are suites and after staying there is December i can promise you won't be dissapointed with the quality of the suites ( unless you are very very hard to please) . if there is a negative it would be you are at the very south of the strip and that the Luxor dominates the view. very small quibbles IMO , for the luxury you get in return (not to mention all the fun and facilitys of Mandalay Bay a corridor away).

while South Point is on the agenda , after going past it a fair few times last vist , i would say if you have a car and have stayed on the strip in the past ( and aren't too bothered if your not this time) it would be a consideration. i would not rule it out next vist ( i'm hiring a car for entire stay)

    Morning ferf
Thanks very much for your feedback - noted about Tripadvisor.
I will deffo look into Orleans today. The Gold Coast was also on the list (as its just over the road from Rio - any opinion?

Just had to laugh when you said we must be gamblers - after a two week stay at the Rio last year (& signing up to their players card on arrival) on checkout between the two of us we had earned somthing like $2 off our stay!!!! Thats how big gamblers we are.
I HATE to lose money!! Will now only play craps (cannot wait to throw those sparkly red dice and am really glad they dont have it here as its highly addictive and I'd probably be bankrupt!) still cant believe how much I won playing that.

Trets - about the poker - thats how my other half started and now look at him! Its amazing how quick you catch the poker bug - I now play myself and love it - came second in a tourney at Sporting Emporium over in Dublin and won a private ladies event whilst over in Vegas (not big money though).
Do you have an opinion about where is good to play in vegas - tournaments only? (neither of us play cash games).

Also - you say on your last visit you checked out South Point - you think its a good one? Is it really that far away (not driven long enought to hire a car whilst we are out there, so thats out) and dont really want to spend a fortune on cabs....

Finally - Anyone else out there ever stayed at the Desert Rose (as ferf says they are condo style apartments) know any good or bad comments? All opinions appreciated.

Wherever we stay I cannot wait to get back there.... 171 days and counting ;)

For small stakes tourneys ($30-$40ish), try Luxor at noon and PlanetHo at 2pm. Luxor poker room looked like it was being refurbished in November.
