Maybe consider Orleans (They're 17 at tripadvisor)...I think I've read that they have a good poker room but others will know more than me...free shuttle to the strip and lower than strip prices...plenty to do on site as well.

    Excellent advice!
Have spent a couple of hours checking out The Orleans and it seems really good in terms of price, location, reviews, amenities and as a major plus it has a free shuttle bus to The Gold Coast - which is just over the road to the Rio - so theres our transport to the wsop sorted! Cost has come out at approx £660 direct with them (can cancel up to 72 hours with no penalty)for two for two weeks which is pretty competitive really.

The Gold Coast comes out cheaper but from my research it's not as good in terms of quality, room size or value for money. I did visit the Gold Coast casino a lot last year (as their craps odds are excellent) and had one of the steak dinners there (you get what you pay for - compared to the Rio's All American Bar & Grill it was awful, but for the price it was excellent!!). It is quite "oldy worldy" in terms of decor and is small in comparison to other hotel/casinos.

So - thanks very much for that tip - The Orleans is now definately on my list - I fancy their executive suites - they look fantastic (heres hoping for an upgrade, but the trouble with staying for 14 nights is that its almost impossible to get one with a $20 note! - I'd settle for a strip view room for that).

Anyone have any first hand experiences of staying at the Orleans or any hints and tips for good rooms, floors, restaurants there etc... ?

I have stayed at the Orleans. I recomend it for a cheapish off strip place to stay it has a good pool and the buffet is good to.

You will have to have better luck than me for an upgrade, I stayed for 3 nights and it is the only place my $20 has got me nothing!!! and she kept the $20...a strip view wouldnt be that great as it is so far away anyway, we had a pool view which was "nice"

I have driven past the south point it looks good but without a car I wouldnt stay there as it so far away (about 4 miles I think)

Tuscany Suites £582 - think I have talked myself out of this already... but this is rated number 54 in tripadvisor...

Steff, my wife & I stayed at the Tuscany, in July 07 & have just booked again for July 08. All I can say is it was fine there.
The suite we had was nice & big & had 2 king size beds, a couch, coffee table, dinning table & chairs, coffee maker, hot plate, microwave, fridge, pot & pans (never ues them!!) bath, shower, "film star" mirror, hair dryer, double sink, iron & ironing board & in room safe. We found it clean & the staff very friendly. Also just opposite is "Lawreys" truly the best steak I have ever had.
Whilst on the subject of food this may be usefull http://www.restaurant.com/listings.asp?VicinitySearchLevel=DISTRICT&StateID=37&SearchID=2026&DistrictID=390&RegionID=96

I bought 2 voucher last year, & had no problem using them, we went to the Himalayan & De Steffanos, both realy nice resturants. I did have a problem using a UK address when I tried to log on, I contacted Resturants.Com & they advised using thier address & it worked fine.

    Hope this helps

Totally agree on restaurant.com but would also suggest signing up on their site to receive emails...every month they send off discount codes for 40%, 50%, sometimes 60% off the price (once saw 70%). We usually buy ours when they're 50% off...so for example a voucher worth $25 toward a meal of $35 or more normally costs $10...with the 50% off it was $5...$5 for $25 off your final bill isn't a bad deal at all! They are good for a year from the time you order so worth stalking them in advance. And you print them out yourself - and you can reprint if you misplace it (which I normally do). The popular ones do sell out though. Beware that you can only use one per party, most are good for parties of 2 or more, some are good toward the alcohol portion of your bill, some aren't...etc...just read the terms for each one before ordering.

Our best restaurant.com find was Austin's at Texas Station - best steaks we have ever had (better than Circus Circus Steakhouse)...a bit off the beaten track but well worth the trip we thought.

Glad it helped. The other thing to remember is if you book now they will only charge you one night as a deposit - which will be refunded if you cancel as above...and should rates go down you can either cancel and rebook or call and ask them to change your rates...so you won't have to pay for the lot up front which many 3rd parties will require.

I haven't stayed at either Orleans or Gold Coast but while I do like the Gold Coast's casino and their buffet is excellent (at least for breakfast) but there's loads and loads more to do at Orleans I think...that said, at Gold Coast you would have Rio next door and Palms across the street so more options in the immediate area. Rio also has a shuttle to the strip...so if you wanted to, you could shuttle from Orleans to Gold Coast, walk over to Rio and shuttle to the strip (though during WSOP may be quite crowded, I honestly don't know)...I think you can get to Bally's, Flamingo, Harrahs and Caesars from Rio.

As for South Point, again, lots to do on site and there is a shuttle to the strip (Mandalay Bay) for hotel guests at least...but too far in my opinion if you don't have a rental.

Thanks for the reply. This evening I've just finished going through the 2007 thread and have picked up loads of useful info. I did read that you stayed at The Hotel @ Mandalay Bay just before Xmas. Can I ask you is there much value in going for a V suite over THEsuite. I can get the V suite for $2400 for 7 nights and THEsuite for $2100 for the period I'm staying. Is it worth booking THEsuite and doing the $20 trick when checking in to get an upgrade to the V suite.

Normally I would stay at the cheapest place I could find but this time as this is a notorious birthday year (my 40th), I want something that will last in the memory.

    Thx again.

One last thing, my gf is a vegetarian, how is Vegas for vegetarians, because she has never been to America before and just has the impression they are a nation of huge steak eaters.

i think we were upgraded to a V suite via $20 trick , but the photos and floorplan for both look very much like the room we had. there does not seem to be a lot in it , if it were me i would go for the "the suite" and try to get a upgrade at check in. if you don't get upgraded you will still have one hell of a nice room .
Do you have an opinion about where is good to play in vegas - tournaments only? (neither of us play cash games).

i only play tournaments too. i made Harrahs poker room my base last trip. it is nothing special but the tourneys are well timed ( 3.30pm one ideal for me) reasonable buy ins and . standard of player was mixed ( a lot of 1st time fish with good sprinkling of sound tourney players)the games were also well structured so you don't have to hit a big hand early to stand a chance of making the money . plus resaonable re buy
plus you get $10 bounty for each player you knock out. take out six and you will have your buy in back  win or lose. plus very frequent passes by cocktail waitress ( poker room has it's own waitress)
will see where i will lay my hat next vist , but i tend to be stick to one room for entire stay. thats just me
Better in my pocket than theirs :rotfl:

There is a meat-based focus, absolutely...however, assuming she is not vegan she should be able to find plenty that will work for her...and even moreso if she eats fish or seafood (I know some veggies who do, and some who say you aren't veggie if you do - so I don't know which category your girlfriend falls into).

Most vegetarians I know steer clear of most buffets except breakfast (if they eat eggs), though if they eat fish then some of the buffets have a wider lunch/dinner variety for them...but many feel like their selections are too limited to make it worth the buffet price and prefer a restaurant.

Loads and loads of restaurants have their menus online so may be worth doing some research.

There's this site that may help with some:

    http://www.usmenuguide.com/lasvegas.html

Though that will include a lot of locals places you might not go to.

www.restaurant.com has lots of menus too (use zipcode 89109 to search) - if you find a restaurant that looks interesting click on its name and on the restaurant's page next to where it says 'overview' it usually says 'menu' and you can click to see it (sometimes with prices, sometimes without).

But many of the restaurants inside casinos have a menu on their own website...may take some searching but you should be able to get a general idea....even if you pick a few restaurants you are interested in and do a google search for 'X restaurant name las vegas menu' you may have some luck.

Some restaurants have menus that are pretty much like phone books and so must surely have something for everyone...Cheesecake Factory comes to mind:

    http://www.thecheesecakefactory.com/menu.htm

There will be some places with almost nothing for her, but (again provided she's not vegan) most will have something she will be happy with.
