For those that havent been to Vegas before, and are wondering what the best location to be is, I think this photo gives a great perspective of how far off centre Mandalay Bay, Luxor and The Tacky Palace are. Normally you would say that Bellagio/Caesars/Mirage/TI are central strip (and PH/Flamingo/Venetian/Wynn on the other side of the road), and thats just about walkable, so long as its not mid-summer. However, even Bellagio is north of Monte Carlo, which is the northernmost hotel shown on the photo.

Thats not to say MB, Luxor, TP, MGM arent great places to stay.........they are, but be aware that you wll be driving or getting a taxi or bus to most places.

Thanks for posting the great pics the shot of the belagio is great and the one down the strip is interesting as you used a zoom and it compresses the distances, you can just see the South Point which is 6-7miles away.

No you wont. There is a monorail from the MGM which runs right up to the Hilton and covers the best part of the strip. Even then there is a monorail from Mandalay Bay to Excalibur.

So not really taxis or buses at all. (Unless you go to freemont, but then you would from anywhere on the strip)

Agreed - I have stayed in The Hotel at Mandalay Bay and in the Luxor and the only time that I even considered getting a taxi was to go downtown. The strip is all doable with walking / monorail.

Gotta agree with sturll and MyFathersDaughter...we used to stay at Excalibur and while we did take the rental car out to go to off-strip areas and occasionally places on the strip, more often than not we got around by foot. As there are so many places to stop along the way unless you're in a rush it's a pretty nice and leisurely stroll up the strip if you want it to be. We now stay at Bally's and have regularly walked up to Wynn even when we had a car we could use...we stop in most casinos along the way for some slot action or a drink, though. :)

The MGM->Sahara monorail can be a godsend at times (though depending on how many people you have and how much you will be using the monorail sometimes a taxi will be cheaper) but mostly we hoof it. Plus, all the walking helps counteract all those great meals. ;)

Edited to add - all of this relates to out of summer trips, though...if you are going during the summer months or even early fall then the heat may be a factor for a lot of people. In June it nearly killed us to walk from Caesars to Ellis Island behind Ballys...partly the heat and partly the exhaust fumes at street level.
