If you have a machine-readable UK passport you don't need a visa. - some info here:

    http://www.natives.co.uk/news/2004/09/21pass.htm

But I highly recommend signing up for the IRIS program at the airport if you have time before your flight. We finally did last trip and it was brilliant - especially for me as I travel on a US passport and when we got back to LGW the queue was all through the barriers and up the ramp and going back around into the entrance to the ramp...would have been over an hour wait for me and instead, it took about 35 seconds! While the benefit isn't as large for those on EU passports, it's still nice to skip the queue.
My understanding is that IRIS is only available to frequent travelers. If it is first time going to U.S. you probably would not qualify. Yes it is a god send to me as well, not having to queue in the non-eu line. Mind, it's a real eye opener when we do have to go through there, they let anyone in!!
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

It's not limited to frequent travellers except frequent visitors to the UK who don't otherwise qualify:

-you are a short-term visitor to the United Kingdom and can show you have been given permission to enter the country as a visitor at least twice in the past six months, or four times in the past 12 months at the time of registration.

Otherwise if you are a British citizen or a permanent UK resident you're eligible.

It is the most awesome thing ever, I believe. I was so worried after seeing the queue for non-EU passport holders...all I could think was if I couldn't get through on IRIS I would be at the absolute BACK of that queue...it's hard for me as I normally wear contacts but they're slightly coloured so I had to take them out to join. I had a LOT of trouble lining my eyes up properly with the screen when I registered (blind as a bat and my husband had to stand behind me and guide me) and they had to try several times to get it to work...so I was really, really nervous in the booth but the green arrow and doors opening was the BEST feeling. :)
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

Stand corrected, so thats why they asked me if i was a frequent traveler. OH has loads of trouble lining her eyes up, she always has to look in the lower mirrors

can anyone recommend an alternative to helicopter rides to see the grand canyon -is it recommended to hire a car and drive the 4.5 hours or does that usually result in being stuck in traffic jams?

    thanks

    Aeroplane.

Most people think if youre only in Vegas for a few days, dont spend ten hours of it in a car staring at desert.
