What is the style while in Vegas? I know there's going to be loads of walking, so comfy shoes are a must! But what do most people wear during the day, and in the evening.

Is there a dress code for the casinos? What about the nightclubs?

Sorry if these seem vain, or silly but I like to travel light. Don't want to be lugging load of clothes that I'll not wear! Need plenty of room in case to bring more home!

    Going 16-23 March - what's temperature like?

You will see a wide range of styles in Vegas. There generally isn't a dress code most places - high end restaurants and nightclubs being the exceptions. We never go to either so I cannot help on those from personal experience, but we spend most of our time in non-grubby jeans/denim skirt and t-shirt/knit top. I usually bring one or two niceish outfits in case we do decide to go to a nicer restaurant for dinner, but without exception there have always been people in jeans - though again, we don't do the really posh places and never to the clubs. Even for shows - you will see some people dressed very nice down to people wearing jeans.

As for temperatures, I look at this so often in the weeks up to our trip to plan what to pack:

    http://www.weather.com/weather/wxclimatology/daily/USNV0049?climoMonth=3

It gives you the daily average highs, lows.

I also check the 10-day forecast religiously the week before we go and repack as necessary. :) When we went last November the forecast was about 20 degrees higher than the averages. That totally screwed with my packing. :)
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

  • Greetings all,

I'm the founder of one of the sites that trets77 mentioned in his excellent Las Vegas guide, Vegas-Promotions.com. I've been (somewhat silently, admittedly) following a lot of his postings over the last year, and he is, without a doubt, an authoritative source for all things Vegas. I wanted to take a second to invite you all to try out a new site that we've just started, called Vegas Hotel Hunt. Soon after launching Vegas-Promotions, it was clear that one of the major drawbacks was that there are often so many promotions and offers to sift through, it was a bit daunting to go through each one to really find the best deal around.

The aim of Vegas Hotel Hunt is to automatically search those deals for you, and give you the results in an organized format. In addition to searching many of special promotions (i.e. every promo listed on Vegas-Promotions), the All-In-One Search also checks the available rates on some of the Las Vegas hotels' direct booking sites (such as Venetian.com, Harrah's properties websites, MGM Mirage properties sites). The site has just been launched, and we are focused on expanding the search's capabilities every day. Give it a try and let us know what you think.

Once again, great job on your write up Trets...

After some advice here and doing my own research on the net I decided against the TheHotel and have got a week book at the MGM Signature. I like the idea of a non-smoking complex and that it is set a little back from the strip so you can chill out a bit after doing the crazy stuff.

Thanks to peeps who are so usefule with tips etc.

Just read the last couple of pages and the temperature thing. Last time I was in Vegas was September in 1995, it hit 105F and quite obviously uncomfortable. The week late I was on the 2nd part of my holiday and was in Orlando; it hit 85F but the humidity made it an absolute killer. I can even remember changing a tyre in my people carrier that day as it went flat going down the freeway. The sweat was pouring off me.

A dry heat is still uncomfortable, but it is nowhere near as bad as a humid heat.

It looks like we are the complete opposite in every regard Steff. We've never had a bad experience with MyTravel ....and Orleans is one of two places we would never stay again! (if the 2007 thread is still accessible you will fin the full review there). Room were fine, good facilities in terms of the cinmea/bowling/concert venue etc. Pool is in the shade until fairly late in the day. A few things put us off the place.

Checked in on a friday for a concert. Couldn't believe the constant 100m+ queue of "colourful" hispanics waiting to cash their pay checks. Apparently it is one the few "strip" casinos that will readily cash such checks. Clientele nore like downtown rather than other strip casinos.

Food - I thought it was fine but Mrs WDYW was sick as a dog the day after we moved to the Bellagio so she refuses to go there again

Smoke - again with the clientele a lot more smokey than other places

Transport - while th shuttle is there, its just a pain to have to use to get anywhere if you don't want to drive.

However, as you said, most reviews are fine! For a long off-strip stay though might be worthwhile setting up your hotels with a bit of flexibility.

    Morning wdyw,
Just to be clear - I havent yet stayed at The Orleans - I have been researching it as an option for my forthcoming 14 nights in Vegas as as result of a suggestion from this thread.

My investigations to date have been from reviews on Trip Advisor and there have only been about 4/5 bad ones. A few posters on here also enjoyed staying there. Thanks for your review - I will try and find the 2007 thread to gauge more opinions - I seem to recall reading the comment of locals cashing their wage cheques to gamble (cos at the time I thought it would be a sad sight to see and one best avoided).

As for staying 14 nights in same place - I suppose I dont want the hassle of moving, but my main motivation is price. Whilst I have provisionally booked The Orleans for 14 nights I may well change my mind if some good deals at the Rio appear (I seem to recall last year that they had some great deals around wsop time) but I need a reasonable back up plan - which is what this is. I REALLY dont want to get there and hate it - may think about staying there one week and somewhere else another....

Photome - thanks for your comments on The Orleans.

wow ..... i feel like doing a Waynes world ..."i'm not worthy" ... in that i only write a few bits on a forum and post deals found on other sites ( mainly yours) . can i just say fantastic site , it was instantly top of my favorites list when it came online :D:D .

many thanks for the new link , it has now been added to the guide. i also see the orginal has been updated as well. i will certainly be making good use of the new link :D . hope we can send lots of UK traffic your way   . i will of course always list your site( or which ever site i use ) as the source of the deals , when i post them here :A
But what do most people wear during the day, and in the evening.

Is there a dress code for the casinos? What about the nightclubs?

a thing a lot of people seem to worry about in Vegas is fitting in , given that 90% of the people around you are also vistors like you means your going to find no hard set of rules for dress code.
for casinos the only real requirement seems to be clothes below the waist if your male and of course some upper body clothing as well if your female.they don't care what you wear if your pumping $$$ into a slot machine
like ferf says only high end restaurants and of course chic nightclubs have dress codes.
i remember dressing up a bit to go to the steakhouse in Monte Carlo ( which is pretty posh) only to find a guy in cutoff jeans and a death metal shirt sat at the next table. a fair few people dress up for shows , but you will always find someone else there in jeans or shorts , not least me ! i don't think i have ever had anything but jeans on to see a show. At Phantom of the Opera in Dec there were a fair few people in full eveing dress , but just as many like me in jeans and a T-shirt / casual shirt.

casual summer clothes when it is hot is generally what most people wear on the strip in the day . at night dress up if your nightclubbing , but otherwise same sort of deal. ;) don't worry about this . thanks for your countdown clock , i have put it up with the rest of them
    Hi Guys,

We've been looking into the accomodation side of things since I booked the flights.

Can I ask you guys opinions on the following please, facilities & location.

    Stratosphere

    Imperial Palace

    Luxor

    Mirage

I could spend days trying to research each, to us they all seem nice, the botton 2 are a bit more expensive. Thing is are they worth it?

    All opinions welcome.

    Thanks

only stayed at Mirage , but my take on others casinos...

Strat is cheap for a reason, it feels a long way from the strip action . and tries to attract people looking for more bang for their buck.

IP is the cheapest center strip casino , it is a bit tacky with all the dealers dressed up as famous people ,other than that the casino looks just like all the other in it's bracket. location wise though it is unbeatable for the money.

Luxor is south strip , so not much going on the road outside ( most foot traffic gets there via monorail) until you reach crossroads of the world at junction of Tropicanna . i used to be negative about it , but it has it charms IMO. rooms are supposed to be big and good for the money

Mirage rooms are very comfy but their age means they don't have much wow factor. our room was nice no question , comfy bed , good view of the strip , good tv and Aircon, nice freebes in bathroom and no noise from anywhere. bathrooms are bit small and decor is just plain really. nothing wrong with it just nothing spectacular with it. The Casino downstairs is a must vist if you have not been , and great fun day and night. i would stay here again if the price is right , but you have to remember it is nearly 20 yeras old now .
Better in my pocket than theirs :rotfl:
