    update
just come back from our visit.
Rick looks the best yet since he has been in hospital. i was worried when i saw him gulping for air on every other breath but his nurse explained that this was him breathing himself and in fact they have halved the oxygen because he is doing so well. His little nostrels were going on every self induced breath - its amazing what little signs you look for but it was very comforting.

the nurse stated that this morning whilst washing his face, he was pulling faces at her his eyes were rolling and he was groaning a little. i cant wait to hear him groaning

they are feeding him a milk mixture through a tube with all the necessary extras he needs. and his blood intake is reduced today. to date Rick has had 24 units of blood- an adult holds between 14-16 units of blood- so that makes at least 24 people have contributed so far in saving the life of Rick.

i stroked his hair again and touched his forehead - today his skin feels almost baby like - lovely and soft. i read his prayer to him along with his cards and put them on his window.

the nurse is going to put a cd player in his room so we are arranging for his best friend to do a recording of his favourite music.

It sounds like he is making really good progress. I'm so happy for you all. I've kept checking all afternoon for any reports from you. About ten years ago I had Glanduler Fever and was off work for 3 months. I was in hospital on two separate occasions and thought I had suffered!!!! After hearing about Rick I've changed my mind.

I used to give blood on a regular basis as they came into work and we could go in works time (that was the reason that swayed me into doing it). Since I had my son 5 years ago I must admit I haven't given blood but along with a number of other new years resolutions I'm going to give blood on a regular basis.

I do think like others have said, it is important to do so and also people should carry donor cards (I do). One of my friends 6 month old baby is awaiting a liver donor (she's another strong person - like you fsdss !!!).

Anyway hope the new year brings a continued improvement in Rick. He's not going to believe what a celebrity he is!!!!!

Take care and lots of love to you all xxxxxxxx

he'll be mortified i should think but his sister is loving it - she sat and cut / pasted the whole thread onto word document and has taken it to the hospital today (theres 29 pages on word) so she's been "chavvin it" round the hospital telling all the staff how famous her brother is".

Aw fsdss you see he knows what is going on and it sounds like he is getting stronger and he is trying to breath on his own.
Rick sweetheart you have a lot of people praying for you and in no time you will be pulling the face cloth away from the nurses
Take care Rick and we all look forward in you reading all of your best well wishes which is sent with so much love xxxxxxx

    ...........works wonders eh!

I'm so very glad Rick is doing so well. His best pal will be really excited to see him I'm sure.

Every Hogmanay my 10 year old lights three candles (because there's three of us - husband, son and me) but DS always says it's for past, present and future. Anyway, get to the point :p we lit a wee extra one for Rick last night.

I'm happy to hear you got some much needed rest yourself last night. Cava would have had me up half the night farting

Have just found this thread and am so happy for your family and Rick .I wish I could donate blood as it really is a life saver .When i had my daughter 14 yrs ago now I had an emergancy section and to cut a long story short i was found ina bed soaked in blood by my then husband .Rushed to theatre and found to have a cut artery in my uterus somehow not their fault they say !!!! Anyway I was transfused 15 units of blood and my family prepared for me not to survive as my blood wasn't clotting .
I obviously did make it but only due to people giving blood so please do give blood it really does save lives .

  • Hi FSDSS. I am glad to hear that Rick continues to make good progress. My eldest DS also had glandular fever when he was a teenager. It really does make you quite unwell. He was not as unfurtunate as Rick. But be prepared it takes a long time to recover from. When he is concious you can tease him, because, i don't know whether you know it's common name is Kissing Diseease !!

    update

Rick is now heavily sedated and not in an induced coma anymore so tomorrow, fingers crossed, perhaps we might see that moan and groan that seems like a lifetime away that we have been waiting for.

he's about to get a bed bath and sheet change

the nurses are brilliant there- how they do that job takes special courage- they're all rallying around him in there, but they are not too busy there today as there is only a few patients there compared to yesterday when the icu was almost full.

and i bet he's never had so many women around him.

i am going to take a camera in tomorrow and photograph him - just to complete the diary i have made for him and to let him know what he's been missing.
