just come back after spending 3 hours with Rick - i am currently emotionless and find it easy to write this down rather than break down whilst the children are around me.
when i saw Rick i nearly fainted - i didn't know what to say to him or what to do - he's completely hooked up and dependent on the machines - his eyes are rolling (which is apparently a good sign), there is some response in his eyes whilst he is recognizing my voice.
i spoke to the consultant and there is a slight improvement however as Rick has none of his own blood in his body the new blood is not able to fight and clot yet. the fear is that his kidneys will shut down (and the drug for dialysis thins the blood which Rick doesn't need) but other than that its just a waiting game although rather than yesterdays "take each minute as it comes" today its "each hour".

i'm glad i took a large flask of coffee as there were no facilities in the crappy family room that we were allocated (something i need to tackle at a later date).

We told him that we love him on numerous occasions (but we do that anyway everytime we see him) - but this time it was said in a more sincere way IYKWIM.

cause of spleen injury appears to be glandular fever :confused:according to the preliminary blood test results, but Rick never knew he had glandular fever.

It must have been a real shock for you to see him in that condition. Glad to hear that Rick has made at least some improvement though x

Only just saw this, ((((hugs)))) to you.
I was facing a bleak christmas with my brother in hospital. He went in an operation and seemed OK for a few days, then he went downhill. Everyone else on the ward were over 60 and one guy was about 50. My brother is only 26 and looked worse than all of them. I went to see him on the worst possible day, he looked out of it with all drips and machines attatched to him, he had contracted C-Diff. Thank the lord, he responded well to treatment and was let out on Christmas Eve after nearly 3 weeks in hospital. He is getting stronger with each passing day and my baby niece is made up to have her Daddy home :)

I can totally understand what you must have felt when you saw him, just remember that our Doctors can work miracles these days, what they can do is totally amazing! I kept telling myself that his age had to mean something and this proved to be right. Your nephew will be fine, he is in the best possible hands and he will find the strength to fight this.

Thinking of you and your family and praying for you all.

It is not a nice thing to happen, especially at this time of year but the fact he is still fighting speaks volumes of how determined he is to beat this.

Just saw this myself. Rick will be in my thoughts tonight, as will you and your family. It sounds like the doctors are doing a good job, but it can't be easy for you all. I hope you get good news soon and that he makes a full recovery.

I'm not allowed to give blood because of some medical problems, but kudos to those of you that are able to, and do.

it is never easy to see a loved one in this situation, and even harder with one so young. he seems to be a fighter and is holding his own, he will being very closely monitered and his care will be constantly reviewed and modified as necessary.. he has gone through so much these past few days and is still fighting his corner.. my thoughts and prayers are still very much with rick and your family.
he is so lucky to have such a loving and supporting family as yourselves. it is good that he shows signs of recognition to family voices as he will be aware of the support and love he is getting.
it is good to hear there are small signs of improvement, even small signs are a step in the right direction.
