@pigpen yes, lots of places I remember. I'll keep the list short though as I don't want to bore the non-Hullensians. I had a Saturday job at Gough and Davy for a while; they had branches in Grimsby and Scarborough too. It was a really nice place to work. I know that's closed but I think someone bought the name and has opened a small musical shop in the old town. I remember Thornton Varley, the department store where the Prospect Centre is, and Willis Ludlow in Carr Lane. That always seemed a bit cut off there and also a bit dowdy. I also had a Saturday job for a while at Conley's jewellers in Paragon Street, near to the Hull Daily Mail office and printing works. Through the windows you could see the highly polished brass of the Mail's printing machines. I could go on but you will all be pleased to know that I shan't.@Zed42 I also have an unusual surname. My father used to say our ancestors came over from Schleswig-Holstein, then part of Denmark, in the 19th century. Certainly my surname is one that people have in southern Denmark, although how common it is I don't know. I have done some family research which suggests we've been here for far longer than 150 years but how long I don't know. Perhaps I'm also part Viking.
My father's family originated in East Anglia, especially Yarmouth, so could be.
@roundtuit my brother lives on the north bank, just outside Hull, and goes over to Brigg on the bridge.@mumtoomany if I'm ever in a position to have goats I'll remember what you said and not bother. They're lovely to look at though aren't they.Anyway, on to flying. Not much flying done. This morning I finished TDing the duvet cover and then packed the bag ready for the laundry company. I wrote a card to our elderly friend in Plymouth, went out and posted it and then went for a walk and also bought a couple of things. Came back and made lunch and washed up. The Waitrose delivery came and I put the things away and then went out to the shops again as an important element of the trifle I'm making for pud on Sunday (A's cousin and her husband are coming for lunch) was missing. I also wanted a couple of things that I hadn't put on the order as I wanted to choose my own (fruit and veg things).I came back and made tea, washed up, did a repeat prescription request for A, tidied the dining table as it tends to get cluttered with all and sundry. Made supper, washed up and then made a simnel cake, which is now in the oven. It was a bit late to start as it's not due out until nearly midnight, but I'm rarely in bed before then anyway, despite my good intentions to the contrary. It's a couple of years at least since I made one and I looked at both Mary Berry's and Delia's recipes. They were broadly similar but Mary uses self-raising flour and Delia plain. Mary uses soft brown sugar and Delia golden caster. I went with Delia's but I liked the idea of Mary's soft brown sugar so I hedged my bets and used half and half. After it had been in a few minutes I noticed that mixture was dripping out of the bottom of the spring-form tin.so I quickly whipped a tray on the shelf underneath. I've not had that before and the tin fits together pretty tightly, plus I had put a circle of baking parchment on the bottom. It stopped after a while so hopefully it will be ok.
Sorry for such a long post; I'll shut up now.5 -

Must find out what this amygdala thing is.
Bathroom and kitchen cleaned. DD has bought herself a fancy coffee maker … just when i am struggling to dink it. I had two close together yesterday and ended up taking anti nausea meds.Don't put it DOWN; put it AWAY"I would like more sisters, that the taking out of one, might not leave such stillness" Emily DickinsonJanice 1964-2016

Evening all ...
Once again, basics done .... finally finished all of DD's washing (She came back from college last w/e and I wanted to get all her bedding done, including duvet / mattress protector etc., which has been a challenge with all the rain, but duvet is now almost dry, hanging over airer).
Peppers and onions potted on.
And started to construct my "tunnel" for the onions, but the rain started lashing it down, which did not make it conducive to sawing bamboo canes in the wet ... ah well.
@pigpen - no poshness in my ancestry, a good strong line in "agricultural labourers" ... best I can get is some came from Colston Bassett and Cropwell Bishop (Notts) (favourite stiltons of mine!)
@Cloth_of_Gold - your surname sounds more traceable (potentially?) ... I wouldn't have a clue on mine. I do find it fun finding more and more connectables though.Right ... let's hope the weather is better tomorrow ... I have onions I want to plant out !GC - March 2024 -7 -
@Zed42 you would think so but I'm having some difficultly, partly because my ancestors weren't very imaginative when giving their children names, and the same ones come up time and time again. It's very time consuming doing family history research and I don't really have the time but I would like to get back as far as I can.The cake's out and having sat in the tin for the prescribed 15 mins it's now on a cooling rack. Mary said to bake for between 1 1/4 and 2 hours, Delia 2 hours and 40, but at a lower temperature. I was largely following Delia's recipe but decided to test it after 2 and 1/4 hours. I was glad I did as it was most definitely cooked. I wish I'd tried at after 2 hours actually but hopefully it's not overcooked and dry, which would be annoying after all the time, effort and expense. Tomorrow I'll make the marzipan and decorate it. Mary has you putting a layer of marzipan in the middle, before it goes in the oven, and Delia has you putting pieces of marzipan in the mixture, but I didn't have time to make marzipan this evening so it will just have to go on the top.All the cake prep things washed and put away, apart from the tin, which is soaking, night time eye routine done, A's breakfast things put out so I can go to bed soon too. Sleep well everyone. Zzzzzz7

I think the recurrent name thing was in most families for many generations.. CF family had 7 generations of Henry George followed by 3 generations of George Henry .. the one in his 70's broke the mould and had a Stephen and a Simon lol. OH's family used maiden names as middle names so his grandads middle name was 'Cunliffe' .. fabulous isn't it? Most of my brood have less common names but quite often my girls names became really popular several years after they arrived.. like the billion 10-15 year old 'Lily's' ... mine is 30 this year! My family are all 'james/john/michael/david' in various combinations.. my nanna was most upset when I did not use any of those for any of my boys! She was more upset when I named my Lily, Lily.. she had a sister-in-law of the same name who she was not friends with lol.. I still love the name.
My great-grandmother was called Kate Middleton for a while.. She had 7 children, 5 of whom were born in September! I think there were a lot of christmas shenanigans there! lol

That became debenhams I believe but again is stood empty. Clifford Dunns was most recently a Farmfoods and is empty now I believe, or it was last time I was up that way. Willis's.. I think is now Primark..
I actually love the reminiscences.

Morning, hope you're all okay today.
I have been a naughty flylady this week. Apart from essentials, paid stuff and walking Poppet, all I've done is read two books.
DH is back home tomorrow so I suppose I need to do some basic flying at least. Level ones then!
Have a great day everyone.Spend less now, work less later.6 -
Good morning my lovelies xx
I'm up, made my bed, taken my meds, completed Wordle and Connections, and supped my first brew.
I stood looking out of my bedroom window for a few minutes when I first got up (6.30 ish) and saw a wood pigeon, two starlings, a blue tit and a robin. Beautiful blue sky and sun shining- probably nippy out there? 🤔 I was working out angles for getting my car out of my drive without risking life and limb. I think I've sussed a way!
piggers - I'll wait until I'm told to expect the patter of tiny feet then commission you to knit for me. 😘
What's on everyone's agenda today? Do tell. Brew 2 for me before I do anything else.
Have a good day.
