Oh Cheery dearest - that money belongs in your account ASAP - not on credit to them! Why should they be earning interest on your money when you could be earning that yourself!
Agree 100% - get rid of that DD - they had no right to use it to take money from your account - I remember reading something about it being illegal! I think you are able to report it to trading standards, but make sure you tell them this is what you are doing as it's oh so satisfying when they scramble to set things right.

Thank you all - that's what I'll do. I was trying to work out if they'd gotten the direct debit agreement (and I could therefore report them and have the bank claw back the money) but couldn't figure it out. Can't find a copy of the original signed agreement (I might have done it over email? Will check there). I'd assumed it was just for fuel rather than works too but can't be sure without checking.
I looked at the invoice/ quote and it does say 'this will be taken by DD on x date'- but I hadn't seen that because its in an odd place, and there's a tear off strip at the end telling you how to pay. Also I quibbles the amount straight away, but they took it anyway
Anyway, need to get the figures straight before I email, and decide exactly what I want them to do.
1. Refund the difference directly to my bank and also send the account credit to the bank, then cancel the DD (probably the simplest)
Actually, that's it, isn't it. I was concocting all kinds of scenarios, involving going through the DD guarantee to cancel the whole payment, then have them take what I owe them from the credit note and refund the rest, but I think that might be too complicated. I'll keep it simple and do it this morning before work!6 -
I have LPG, the price is consistent during the year and I pay on invoice and it is so easy in that I never have a credit, and simply call when I need them (I use cannisters). I put the same amount into a 'bills account' to cover household bills and whilst I have DD for somethings I actually like paying for what i am having delivered rather than just paying regardless.
Hope Mr C snr continues to improve.Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became
In the event the proverbial hits the fan then co-habitees are better stashing their cash than being mortgage free !!2 -
I do the same with my oil - they offer a monthly DD and/or DD on fill, and a monitoring system so they top up whenever you need it, but I've never trusted them (and to be fair, with oil I can at least shop around). I think you can make it clear that you've lost trust in them, and therefore you want all credit returned, plus the money they owe you, after which you will pay on invoice.3

Yep, email sent. They've been pretty quick at responding so far, so we'll see what happens.
Pegged the washing out, and watered the patio plants while I was out there - suspect I've lost a few in the heat while we were away but hopefully most will revive.3 -
Oh, and car passed MOT (inevitably - our garage does everything it needs and THEN takes it to the test centre round the corner, which I think is a very sensible approach quite frankly 😂). Brakes done too (I mean they would have been needed for the MOT, but I also would Have taken it for that without the MOT, if you see what I mean). £451 all in, not too bad considering the car's 16 this year and has done 164000 miles 😂7

What a flaming liberty @Cheery_Daff! They might even be relying on customers' overpayments to keep the company afloat? The numerous ways they've found to get it wrong and keep the money are making me suspicious. Best get it back before they go down the pan...onwards and upwards love Humdinger xx3

Well they've replied - some nonsense 'reassuring' me they hadn't calculated it wrong, it was just about the date my DD had gone out 🙄 Really? So why did you refund a really specific amount to my account, that just happened to correspond to the incorrect calculation I believed you'd done? 🤔 And if you already knew, at what point exactly were you going to refund the remaining £300+??
Apparently it's all going to be in my bank account soon. Won't hold my breath.
Annoying so-and-sos. We're in the middle of a 2 year contract, and I don't think we'll find anything cheaper at this point so we'll stay put, but I'll definitely plan to move afterwards!6 -
