Thanks @beanielou and @ladyholly Mr C's going over tomorrow, so we'll hopefully know more then.
Not much to report today. Been to work, paid for a bit of parking. Cancelled Mr C Snr's Sky Sports subscription - he has it through the TV normally, but we got a temporary subscription when he was in the care home so he could easily access it on the computer, then when he went home the TV was broken so we left it, but it's back on the TV now so I've cancelled it - unintentional good timing as the payment was due out tomorrow. Obviously we don't know what'll happen now, but if he lands up in a care home permanently we can set it up again (and he'll be able pay for it himself at that point).
Had an email from the counsellor saying I'd forgotten to pay for last week's session so did that and apologised.
Did I say I need to email the LPG people again? The plonkers have refunded the wrong amount and still owe us a couple of hundred quid 🙄 they've also put it as a credit onto our account rather than paying it into the bank 🙄
Can't decide if I want to cancel their direct debit privileges - they take it in full after each delivery so it would mean we'd have to actually pay (it's only 3 times a year) but given that they took almost £900 for work that was in dispute when they took it, and can't even refund into the bank, I don't trust them!
Little car is going to the garage tomorrow - brakes and MOT 😬 Hopefully not much wrong except brakes, fingers crossed. I'm going to a friend's for tea and then joining her weightlifting class - apparently the first class is free (and it'll be my only class as it's a monthly subscription and I won't be joining). Nice to do as a one off though, and it's very close to work!6 -

I can't remember Cheery - as we're going into summer, do you have a top-up of LPG coming up, or do you take advantage of seasonal 'cheapness' anytime before (say) September? The point I'm trying to get to, is if you save an amount for LPG per month anyway (so that it's ready for the tri-annual DD payment), can't you do that, and have the amount ready 'on demand' for each LPG delivery. Whilst I assume that the 'works' were a one-off, and unlikely to be repeated in the near future, as you say, the company have proved themselves to be unworthy of your trust over using the DD system.
I suppose one issue might be that LPG might be more costly per unit if paid 'on demand', rather than by DD? - sorry to sound vague, I've never lived anywhere with an LPG supply. But if the unit cost, or tank refill cost is the same for 'invoice' payment, as it is for DD, then I'd pay it in full/on demand, using the budgeting skills you already have.
Hope it's good news regarding MrC snr, and that help and support is forthcoming - for him and for yourself and MrCheery, going forward.

Thank you both xx
Greying - no, we don't need to go up in the summer, we're on 2 year fixed price contract so it doesn't change (your thinking of oil, I think, which often has a variable price as you describe). As you say, we put aside cash each month anyway, the only difference would be that we'd have to remember to actually pay the invoice when it arrived.
So it would be making things more inconvenient for us... we'll see.3 -

If there is no discount for payment by DD then cancel it. After they've refunded you properly. Tell them that if they don't give you a refund rather than an account credit you'll be charging interest and applying that to the next payment.3

I would definitely cancel the direct debit, they've repeatedly proved they can't be trusted, and it doesn't sound like they'll be shy of telling you if you've forgotten a payment by five minutes!4
