Getting there (although if you ask Mr C he'd say we were going backwards - he's not dealing with it well 😬). I've spent most of the day getting the bedroom in order - which doesn't sound much but I can't tell you the state it was in 🤢
Lovely neighbour brought us cheese and toasted muffins and a cuppa 🥰🥰 Lovely friend of Mr C's is coming over tomorrow to put in a day's labour.
So. Bedroom done, and shake n vac down on the carpet - a sticking plaster solution but he wanted to be home ASAP so sticking plasters are the order of the day 🙄 Bed needs to be assembled tomorrow but otherwise that room's done.
Just having 5 mins before prepping and painting the stairs.
Mr C has brought everything that got shifted upstairs back downstairs again.
Tomorrow I think will be a painting day - kitchen hasn't been touched, there's a bare plaster wall downstairs, plus another 3 in the living area that could do with a coat, although that can wait. Trying to focus on what's necessary - but it's VERY hard to do any DIY with a bossy almost-90-year old in the house so the more we can get done before he's back the better.
Saturday will be snagging and picking up any bits and pieces we still need, then we're going to get him at teatime.
Part of me wants to be in my own bed on Saturday night but that'll involve a 3 hour drive after we've got him settled (and we can't share the drive as we have both cars here) so I think I'll flake out here and go home Sunday morning. Mr C will probably stay another day or two, we'll see.
Right, tea break over, back to it!6 -
Well done on staying focused and not ending up like a rabbit in the headlights at the enormity of the project. I agree it will be easier to get on with the work done whilst Mr C snr is not in the house.Fashion on a ration 2025 0/66 coupons spent

This is sounding really hard … I hope you two can catch a break soon.

<proffers tea and the good biscuits> You'll meet yourself coming back as my nanna would say. Hope you get it done and are back in your own bed soon.

I am sorry that you are having such a hard time. I know what you mean about bossy 90 year olds and there is no point in trying to argue with them. I hope things calm down soon and you are able to relax in your bed and that Mr Cs back improves.4

Glad your plumber has been to sort your knob issue out anyway
hope Mr CD Snr can get home soon, it all sounds exhausting!
Right. That's enough filth for a Sunday 😁
Hope you get thru the rest of the DIY OK - all sounds hardDON'T BUY STUFF (from Frugalwoods)
No seriously, just don’t buy things. 99% of our success with our savings rate is attributed to the fact that we don’t buy things... You can and should take advantage of discounts.... But at the end of the day, the only way to truly save money is to not buy stuff. Money doesn’t walk out of your wallet on its own accord.

Thank you all xx
We are getting there! A friend came to help today, and we've painted the first coat on the kitchen, and also touched up other paint, oh and I did a second coat on the stairs and landing as well. This evening we put the bed together (we'd bought a new one just before the leak - fortunately it was still in the plastic), and cleaned the bath. Also between us fitted shelves, cleaned the microwave, Mr C's friend popped in and sorted a specific problem we'd been having, plus shifted a load of stuff back downstairs and started putting rooms together with furniture etc.
Oh, and started moving all of our tools etc back into the cars to make space.
Popped in to see Mr C Snr to remind him he's leaving at teatime, not after breakfast tomorrow 😂
Checked banks for the first time in forever 🙈 this time of year is always slightly hairy, and I had a mild panic when there was only £300 in the current account, when I was paid 3 days ago 😱 But the car insurance has gone out, quite a lot of DIY stuff has gone on the credit card (paid in full yesterday - we'll get some of that back from Mr C Snr), and I've been feeding several regular savers without drip feeding from savings so it was inevitable really. Looks like I'm still feeding regular savers that are closed - not got round to cancelling the standing orders 🙄 So I've done some transfers and things are looking reasonable.
Need to pay for the care home tomorrow. (Or tonight, but I'm too darn tired and would likely mess it up)
Treated ourselves to a takeaway tonight. Friends are out so we have the house (and the dog 🥰) to ourselves.
So, tomorrow...
Second coat on the kitchen, and then tidying, cleaning, last minute everythings, including popping to buy several things that are missing, a quick food shop (someone else can do that) etc etc. There's a small bit of carpet to fit on the landing. Then we'll go and get him and maybe get him fish & chips for tea or something.
Sunday morning I'm just going home first thing. Mr C may pop and see his dad, but I'm going home. Meant to be at band practice late afternoon, and I'm obviously working Monday, and I'd really like to do some normal things like washing some clothes, and myself 😂
Never did get round to sorting the car insurance, so that's just renewed at the extortionate price (£800 for the year, increased from £650 last year). Hey ho.
Right, bed i think!10 -
Well, we made it! Just 🙄 I'm never exactly meticulous with DIY but I don't think I've ever bodged so many things in my life. Very unsatisfying, but couldn't be helped. The place was clean, tidy, and not damp, and in the circumstances that was the best we could hope for.
Stayed for 3 hours after he got back, putting clothes away, showing him where things were, and also trying to fix the TV - it turns on, but neither of the remotes work, and we can't get the Internet to work either. But at 10.15 the pair of us had simply had enough. His computer works with the dongle he had in the care home, and since he's so insistent that he can do everything himself, he's just going to have to figure out the TV on his own, or manage without.
Just grabbing our final takeaway of this escapade. Clearly I'm not going home tonight, and I don't even think I'll manage a shower before bed as there's no hairdryer here we're staying, and I stupidly left mine at home when I was there for a couple of hours.
Still, should be home tomorrow, fingers crossed. Not as early as I'd like, and I'll still have to pack and drive on the one day I have actually off, but that can't be helped.11 -

Hope you can get back to normality soon and get some rest today (Sunday)!
