Good to see you back and the new job is sounding positive.   And yes, taking food to work really does help.

Thank you, @dawnybabes and @peb so best laid plans and all. May came home with a head full of nits yesterday so I spent a whole hour last night shampooing and brushing mays waist length hair with a nit comb! Roo came home and has a sickness bug, poor thing he’s so poorly, so I took the day off and will be working from home tomorrow.

I’ve so far spent £55 of my £400 spends budget, which is not great. It’s been on coffee and syrups and I’m not sure what else. But I really need to get a hold of my spending, I’d like it to only be £200 but we’ll see what we can manage.

OH and I have just seen another house we love! But it’s vast amounts of money. Have spent the day seeing if we could afford it. Jury is still out but it would be nice although not quite in keeping with the forum title….. and we would be very much maxed out…. Food for thought.

Trying desperately to make today a NSD. Roo is still poorly so I’m working from home. I hate it when the children are poorly makes me so sad for them. On the upside I Have managed to sort some washing and hang up another load. I can almost see the bottom of the wash basket now….

  • Hope your little ones are better soon
I am also in the dilemma of wanting to pay down mortgage but also wanting to move
    MORTGAGE BALANCE when we moved Aug 2024, £120,000. January 1st £118,267.06. May 1st, £116, 123, June 1st, £115,536, New mortgage added for extension- £165,000 July 1st!
    Mortgage Overpayments - September-December, £152.46. J- £103.27, F- £115, M- £91.50, A- £100, M- £200, J- £200. J- £200.
    Total- £1162.23
Goal pay off 1% of current mortgage in 1 year. £1200. (96.83% there)

    EF- first goal £300
  • Would the new mortgage on the bigger home mean no OPs for a while? Will it impact family fun and expenses?
Maybe try and put the difference between the current mortgage and the possible new one aside as savings or indeed as OP on current home for a few months to see how your budget feels at a higher level.
    DON'T BUY STUFF (from Frugalwoods)
No seriously, just don’t buy things. 99% of our success with our savings rate is attributed to the fact that we don’t buy things... You can and should take advantage of discounts.... But at the end of the day, the only way to truly save money is to not buy stuff.    Money doesn’t walk out of your wallet on its own accord.

Hi Missy, new subscriber here as I've just started my own MFW journey, also migrating over from the DFW boards and reckon we have a similar starting point to work from so following with interest!
Debt Free I FFEF I Building Savings I 2025 Plan:
    1. Regular Savings £8,200/£10,000
    2. Slush Fund £3,800/£10,000

    Save £12k in 2025 - #50 - £12,000/£20,000 (60%)
  • The cost of moving is huge - in terms of energy, emotion and money. I have mild regrets a bout the one that got away (at the start of lockdown) but I can also see why it was the right decision based on the information we had at the time.

I wouldn’t if I were you Missy, unless your current house is totally unworkable. Nothing squeezes your budget like overspending on a house.

Some rules of thumb to consider:

Would the mortgage plus council tax be under 29% of joint income?
Would your total ‘needs’ (housing, insurance, energy, internet, car costs, basic groceries, childcare, debt payments if relevant) be under 50% of your joint income?

If the answer to either is no, it generally means you can’t afford the new house - you’ll end up feeling very squeezed and either missing out on wants or not saving (or even taking on debt to afford your lifestyle).

I'd love to move to a village nearby but realistically it would be tight and we would not be able to have the treats or a holiday every now and again.  Keep overpaying the mortgage and maybe look again in a few years time.  Hopefully by then the current mortgage will be reduced and you will have some savings and emergency fund behind you.
