Neither I or my Dad had any success with mushroom kits last year. We do however seem to be able to sprout the non eating variety in the garden with no problems round the bottom of two tree stumps

How do you know you can't eat them?

Well I don't know what they are, so therefore I won't eat them incase I get poisoned!

When I tried a kit a few years ago nothing grew so I threw it into a corner of the garden. The next 2 years I had lots of mushrooms but was too scared to eat in case they were mixed with poisonous ones.

  • My mum bought one of those kits and nothing grew.
I suspect it's probably easier to grow weed than blinkin' mushrooms from those packs LOL!

  • My Father used to grow them in a brick shed with only a fanlight and they grew and grew. It was damp & cold in there and very dark. Maybe it's not cold/dark enough?

We got the grand total of 4 mushrooms from our kit!!

Very tasty but bloomin' expensive
  • Gardening Which did a review of mushroom growing kits sometime last year. The conclusion was - don't bother! As far as I can remember, most of the kits produced nothing and the ones that did produce some mushrooms took ages and the yield was pathetic. Sorry! I had a kit on my Christmas list but removed it when I read the article.

    Hi
I have boutght packets of mushrooms seeds in the gardening centre, instructions are on the back. I have put them on a patch on my allottment where I`ve put fresh chicken manure( as aparantly I can`t plant anyhing there now - too fresh). i just sprinkeled them on the top and raked them in slightly so they are not too deep. I have no idea if they will grow , but I will let you know in about 2 months they should be popping up.
I have bought some kits before and had them in the house over the winter , just sat on the floor in a box and had a good crop. I think they are very easy to grow, have a go and see. Good luck!

You can get logs with the spores drilled into them.
