Tried a kit a couple of years ago. We only got ONE mushroom---but OMG it was the biggest we ever saw!0

I did one from woollies a couple of years ago.
It needed darkness but air so I stuck it under a low chair to keep the cat off and sprayed it religeously. Decided it was a goner and left it in the outhouse for a few days and thy grew. I think the house was just too warm for them.0 -
i got one last year and it made a very nice box with funny smelling compost in it, didn't do a bloomin thing!0

HI
i'm looking for some advice,we have had a successful first 2 years of growing veg in the garden, even managing to grow sweetcorn last year.
this year we'd like to try growing mushrooms outside and are looking for tips to help us succeed.
also want to try peppers, which would be best in the ground or growbags and are they easy to germinate?
thanks in advance0 -
Hi,
I am by no means an expert but last year I did grow some bell peppers and they were really lovely. I grew mine in large pots in a greenhouse but I would imagine a growbag would work. They do require a decent amount of light and warmth to germinate and they are slower than, for example - tomatoes. They were great as different colours grew on different plants and green ones could be left on the plant longer to get red ones if you would like them.
Do you have a greenhouse or warm and bright windowsill? If so that would work great :j0 -
Well I have had no luck at all with growing mushrooms - did everything suggested and nothing appeared!
Peppers and chillis, I have grown in a greenhouse and in the garden, they need to be in full sun in the garden and I have found don't grow as big as in a greenhouse. I have found no issue at all growing from seed - started indoors with a heated propagator. Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!

Hi there I am just wondering what your thoughts are on growing your own mushrooms? We use them quite a bit and I have seen the kits for £5.99 and wondered what quantitiy you would get from growing 100g of the white cap mushroom spawn. We have plenty room in our garage and I am looking to start growing as many veg as I can, and have heard they are very easy to grow. Cheers for your replies in advance,

Waste of money !
Unless you strike lucky they are not easy to grow. You need the right sequence of different temperatures which you won't get in your garage.
£5.99 is a lot for a bucket of horse **** !
Just buy the bucket, fill it with compost and plant carrots - can't go wrong.0 -
Hi Suzy
we have an older thread about mushrooms, so I'll add your query to it, to keep all the replies together

I've been thinking about growing mushrooms recently. Tried the kits and they are a load of rubbish.
I've seen some mushroom spawn in Wilkinsons and have recently got a good source of all stages of horse manure if I want it, so it seems a good idea.
I've also seen some field mushroom spawn you can buy in to seed your lawn and they are supposed to crop for up to ten years, although they do say its difficult to get going.
Anyone experience with either?Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0
