That door catch is an absolute mystery. I've been racking my brains over it. It was a good idea to check it hadn't broken & fallen inside the door.
Hope you get to see your friend. The ice has been awful here. Mr F has just gone out to thaw the car ready for his journey to work & temperatures are expected to be even lower here tonight. I've dug out some woolly tights!

I know it’s still driving me mad 😀 I did get out to see my friend as it was raining again by the time I left so everything had defrosted . I hope you manage to keep lovely and warm x

How strange about the door catch, I hope you get to the bottom of it. I rarely post on local FB groups for the very reason there is always a random man who makes a nasty/sarcastic comment which annoys me and I have to stop myself from saying something nasty back.

I hope you manage to get the catch up with your friend today.
I did reply to the man and told him he was rude and who on earth would post such a thing for attention and he blocked me 😂😂 I did meet my friend and we had a lovely chat

Could the door catch have fallen into some rubbish & got thrown out accidently?
No because there’s nothing near the door. If it could have fallen out which is impossible it would have landed on the bare floor next to the cat bowls. I looked everywhere and I’m talking about inside cupboards, and under  and inside the fridge,in the cat bed which is nowhere near the door under the washing machine the recycling bin and it’s nowhere to be found

That is so weird about the door!
Yep it’s very weird and my friends husband says he and his workmate definitely only took the door off the hinges then put it back on and besides I have closed that door since the floor was laid so would have noticed if it was missing. The door to the kitchen is always open so I don’t take much notice of it but as soon as I turned around I saw the thing was missing 🤷‍♀️

Could a cat have decided it was a toy & taken it somewhere to bury?

That's a thought, @badmemory. If it's a round handle a cat could have batted it under a sofa or something. Mind you, how did the cat take the handle off the door? Perhaps something in it (handle not cat) was damaged during the work on the house, it later broke and the cat noticed... or is a local magpie able to get in? They do take things they think are treasure and I think other corvids might do similar.

Can you get another handle to match and put it on. It might well turn up in an obscure place when you’re least expecting it.

I think a photo might explain it better the first photo is the kitchen door and what is left as you can see there is a bar through the middle which holds the mechanism in place the second phot is the living room door and is what the kitchen door should look like, the plate on the front can’t come off without being unscrewed

It's just about got to be the workmen then, though I'm not sure why they'd need to take the latch out.

Usually blaming the cat has some value but then there's that lack of opposable thumbs... and certain workmen are adept at excuses, though I have no experience of the ones you used.

That has got to have been unscrewed & I don't think even then it could come out without the handles being removed.  It would be the "spindle" joining the handles that would make that latch move so it could not have been independent of it.  Someone has removed that.  Just think about how it works.  Press down the handle which turns the spindle between the two handles which moves the latch which allows the door to be opened.  In the picture you can see the piece joining the handles.  My sincere apologies to any cats in residence.
