Mardatha, I grow salads on my windowsills in winter, and herbs all year round, and have never had any problem. How much you can grow will depend on your windowsill space, 'greenhouse' crops such as tomatoes, peppers, aubergines and cucumbers need a bit of space and ideally a south facing window, salads are pretty tolerent of north-facing windows.0

It feels a bit mad, because I got a big enough garden. Maybe I could start some of them off on the windowsill and get them a decent size then shove the pot outside... but the tomatoes stay IN, the winds would ruin them. I spent years and £££s on things I love like hollyhocks, sweet peas and gladioli that got ruined year after year.
Have got some seeds here and when the gales stop I might venture out for compost !0 -
If you like fennel that would probably do well in a windy position... I've just removed some self set plants that have been in my garden for a couple of years and the roots were really thick and deep (I was surprised - was expecting something stringy and easy to pull up, but had to get my spade involved).TOP MONEYSAVING TIP
Make your own Pot Noodles using a flower pot, sawdust and some old shoe laces. Pour in boiling water, stir then allow to stand for two minutes before taking one mouthful, and throwing away. Just like the real thing!0 -
I've just had a dismal failure trying to grow mixed salad leaves, sown on 19th December, on our East facing kitchen window sill. The seedlings are pathetically spindly and will bareful add a garnish on one sandwich. I suspect the light levels are currently just too low. However, mustard and cress do seem to grow successfully all year round. You'll probably have more success if you wait until March/April to sow.0

ok that's noted ta. I love fennel and have some seeds here, plus next door grows that and the feathery leaves are gorgeous.0

I have windowsills.
Plants that I put on them thrive they get a lot of sun, to the extent I'm fed up trimming back my money plant and getting cuttings established. I'm running out of people to take them.
My question is this...
If I grow tomatoes inside on the window sill, will I get fruit?
Potatoes. Could I throw a bag of compost in the corner of one for a couple of plants? The bag would fit I'm just thinking about the growing aspect....

oh yes grow some tomatoes, peppers and chillis, all you need to do to get fruit is to tap the plants and mist them
I wouldn't bother with spuds really -take up too much space IMHO - with toms you can be picking for months on endJust call me Nodwah the thread killer0 -
If you get a certain amount of people [check with CAB] you are entitled to a space of land [nominal fee] from your council, to use for planting.0

I grew hanging basket tomatoes last year which were fairly prolific and compact - they'd work in a pot. You need to water and feed frequently though.
I don't know what your arrangement is but can you put up a couple of brackets outside your windows and grow in hanging baskets. You can get hooks that allow you to swivel the basket through 360 degrees to enable you to pick from all around.
What about a window box which you could water and havest through your window.7 Angel Bears for LovingHands Autumn Challenge. 10 KYSTGYSES. 3 and 3/4 (ran out of wool) small blanket/large square, 2 premie blankets, 2 Angel Claire Bodywarmers0
