fabulous advice.  I drifted into what i do now.  I seem to be good at it.  before I did this I worked in sales and before that in hotel contracting for a tour operator. I think it is called a 'portfolio career'    I've never had a direction but it all worked out in the end, so, KK is right none of that "no direction" and I really hope you have a fab half term :)
Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became

In the event the proverbial hits the fan then co-habitees are better stashing their cash than being mortgage free !!
  • My Mum told me at 60 that she'd finally found out what she wanted to be - Retired!!! I'm the same as you DFW, no idea what I want, kids have taken priority over career and I've drifted from terrible job to terrible job. I've just applied for a job as a part time lecturer in a college, it's double what I earn now after really not valuing my worth, like you. Is that something you could consider?

ooh Happy half term from me also. Enjoy the rest. A lot of people have said to me why not do something different, well maybe the best course of action is do the same but with a better environment? Is there somewhere else doing the same job a possibility? but hopefully better behaved kids?

    Happy half term.

Maybe you could do the morning pages? Journal each morning three A4 pages long hand and then throw away.... it helps to bring things up to the surface and you can muse on next career moves...
    DON'T BUY STUFF (from Frugalwoods)
No seriously, just don’t buy things. 99% of our success with our savings rate is attributed to the fact that we don’t buy things... You can and should take advantage of discounts.... But at the end of the day, the only way to truly save money is to not buy stuff.    Money doesn’t walk out of your wallet on its own accord.

  • KK your post is very helpful! Thank you ...
What are your talents and qualities? I can see many from here from what you describe about how you work and what you do.
    - What do YOU want? Just like you worked out what your OH wanted and manifested a job that didn’t even exist, do the same for yourself. Don’t fear to dream.
    - What are your non-negotiables? For me in my current job I HAD to have a decent boss, not in the food industry - so far the indications are good on the boss and I couldn’t be further from the food industry 😉 …
-What about the pragmatic aspects - how far / long are you willing to travel, what hours do you want, what level of responsibility do you want etc?

Talents & qualities...I think I am switched on, sensible, have common sense and also fantastic problem solving skills. I see so many that lack these very basic things at work from management all the way down to my level in every job I have had lately. It is frustrating which is why I eventually come to a time when I cannot, will not shut my gob and will speak to management - and then usually need to leave my job :joy:
Before I went to uni I was running my father's business- a chain of over a dozen shops. Flitting between them all, hiring, firing, stock control, meetings with suppliers, I also learned the trade from a young age as we were in the service industry, so was often found in my steel toe cap boots as well as being able to don the cap of boss in a suit. -He was setting me up to take it all over. Huge family fight ensued, I left it one day and didn't go back. That was the end of that and I ended up drifting into uni as a mature student thinking this has to be better for me and DS1 (who was 7 at the time).....it wasn't I ended up pregnant and, well,  the rest is history. I definitely have flexibility, ability to change what I am doing with a moment's notice and resilience  ...
What do I want? Without sounding lazy here or like a dreamer (I am a Pisces though so sadly it's my default) I dream and have done since a young child of writing for a living, sat by myself, with no one around me to zap or drain my energy, to be able to create and be joyful in what I do and not have people trying to put a downer on me. I have noticed at my current work that I went in with a great attitude, I was positive (I usually am till it's zapped dry out of me) and I intended to do my job and not get embroiled in the politics and the drama. I was put in THE worse group in the entire college for behavioural issues though and the worst group for emotional difficulties.....that meant it was impossible to not get involved. The job itself, never mind the people is draining. I have had jobs before, working from home where I have maintained my energy levels and worked in my own time. I work well in a team. But I have noticed I become very quickly the one everyone comes to with their problems (it is partly why I got into tarot reading in the first place) and use me as a free therapist. I would HATE to be a therapist. I find it tiring, draining and my energy is never 100% after taking on all their problems.
Non-negotiables for me are also a good boss which is the reason I left my father's business, he expected me to do three people's jobs whilst I was also trying to be the best mum to my eldest....he ended up in wrap around care in prep school for three years and I barely saw him. The last two jobs I had and it is probably why I am still umming and ahhing about staying where I am, I feel like the management here is better and they do listen to your concerns. I am wondering if I need to add not working in education to this too. I seem to fall into it wherever I go? My very first proper job (aside from working in the family biz since I was 14) was in a very big fast food restaurant (ya know the one with the big yellow M) I was 17 and within 6 months I became the fastest on the tills and we were a large London restaurant, and thereby became the till trainer ...and every job I have had since I seem to work my way to training people in something or other. Currently it is GCSE math & English most of the week
I won't travel. The job I had with my father- I travelled the entire West Midlands sometimes starting at the top of Birmingham and needing to visit several sites before ending my day (very late) lower than Worcester. Half the reason I left was the travel / traffic and it is the reason why we have upped sticks this last year and moved back to the city. So the job needs to be here. I have no car as I share and I would have to rely on public transport at least until I could afford another one. For the wages i usually get this ends up being a non negotiable for me as I would end up wasting so much travelling anywhere bigger. This is a job to me and I could say I have missed the boat for a career but I know it's not true. It is more because I don't feel I have ever had the need or desire to have a career. I want a job I enjoy, a job that pays a decent wage, and one that I get to leave at work at the end of the day. I very quickly burned out on the fast paced, high powered ones I have had along the way and don't want to do the same again. I enjoy being boss but I don't enjoy the long hours, the drain and all the extras always expected of you.

I wish I knew how to succinctly write an answer but I am a bit of a rambler, sorry
