Sticking with the use up, I have a split pea soup in the slow cooker. That used up the bag of yellow split peas, some of the frozen onions and some celery. Have used up all the tomatoes in the fridge to make butter bean and tomato soup. Some sweet potatoes are in the oven to cook to make a cake along with a soda bread but that might not be a success as I've used up some dubious spinach and garlic in it and so far it is refusing to become more than a sticky mess on the baking tray.
Most of this will end up back in the freezer I'm trying to empty but it will be fast cheap lunches over the next couple of weeks with a sugar free cake as a treat.
Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became

Ah, but does the soda bread taste okay? Who cares what it looks like! I always like the sound of the things you cook.
Do you do your own sugar free cakes? And if so, can you make any recommendations please? I did a banana one for the youngest children at DGD's party, but that was a recipe from DD and I'd like to expand my repertoire.

And fab that VNM reckons door frame can be done yourselves. Well done sending details for patio work, have a chase of fencer and front drive quote Mon morning, always feels a bit chaotic dealing with several things at once but much better outcome to get as much sorted in one go as possible!

Both here and at the last house the door frame has turned out to be the weak point in security (give the door a good shove and the frame would probably detach with the door still firmly locked into place) both times it has just been a case of screwing it more securely to the wall. Hopefully the VNM can get it sorted quickly.

Our old 1970s back door frame was a bit on the wobbly side. My dad got some very solid fixings and put A LOT of them through the frame into the brickwork. There was no way it was moving in normal use after he'd finished with it… as the builder found out when we extended out the back and the door and frame had to be removed. It did not come out without a fight!

I can reassure you that piggies do not get to go on fun trips to make more piggies these days. It's all artificial insemination (and coincidentally VD, a real problem in pigs in the 80s, is now non existent).

Well , I've learned something this morning! Cupid's measles in pigs? Mightily relieved to hear that it's gone though sad to hear of the solution for the pigs. Love Humdinger xx

I had not come on MSE this morning expecting to be informed of historic VD issues in pigs!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂

😀😀😂the knowledge base on this forum is remarkable.
on a serious note for Cherryfudge if she has got beyond the serious issues of pig sexual health - the cake was really simple. I've made it for years, cant remember where the original idea came from. Cook 2 or 3 small/medium sweet potatoes, then skin and mash. Add 100 gms apple puree (Clearsprings do a nice one but I just used some apples from last year that were in the freezer), 1 cup of polenta, 2 eggs, juice and zest of 2 oranges and a quarter of a teaspoon of baking powder (I forgot the baking powder yesterday). Mix up thoroughly and poor into a loaf tin lined with parchment (about a 2lb loaf tin) and cook in oven (I cook at 180) for 45 to 55 mins until a knife comes out clean.
It is not that sweet but it is very cake. VNM loves it and he usually only goes for very sweet things.
