I too would check with your accountant. They will know how much aggro it is likely to cause. I totally understand you not wanting or needing to get into any new problems with the ex. Sometimes life is just too short to tolerate it.

Right I've read all the comments and thought about this. I have decided you lot are of one mind and I am going to email my accountant today and ask him if we can adjust back returns. I've thought about it over and over again and simply decided if one of his legal arguments was that I made the overpayments only because he was supporting me (absolute poppycock) and that the money was jointly owned then and therefore he was entitled to half the property then he should have been paying tax on his share.
As to whether HMRC go after him or not is not my concern. My concern is that I do not want any more stress so I am going to put it to my accountant and get a view on this.
It might be I have to pay the tax because the money went through my account but let me get a professionals view. (I think my accountant is very genuinely nice and he has tried to help out where he could during that sorry mess so lets see what he says).
Thanks for helping me think this through.
Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became

In other matters I have LPG gas delivered and my bottles turned up yesterday but they couldn't deliver because the gate was locked. Mystified I went to unlock the padlock that chains the gate only to discover that UK Power Networks who have a little substation on my land had used their padlock to link both ends of the chain rather than linking one end of the chain and my padlock. If it is done like that we both have access. The way it had been left the gas bottles could not be delivered.
The gas was sent away, and then I spent ages on the phone trying to find someone who could resolve this. Finally made contact with the surveyor who wanted pictures (!) and texts and an email. I told him I did not have time for such a palaver having spent 2 hours tracking him down and could he just make a note in the old fashioned way with a pen and paper. Apparently not. He also did not know when someone could get here.
The VNM arrived during the final explanation and said he did not have lock picking stuff with him but he would go and look (WAIT - LOCK PICKING STUFF -.what the heck.. is he not a VNM after all??) He returned a few minutes later with a small metal bar and a mallet from his work van and the padlock. I thought he was going to take the pictures for me but apparently he went to solve the problem and did so with one swift blow and it was removed). Rang the gas company and the gas can be delivered Friday and they were very understanding.
Then checked the 'lock picking information'. Turns out he was once fascinated by locks and thought he would learn how to do it as a hobby and I learnt more about locks whilst cooking dinner than I needed to
Today the surveyor rang me back and was somewhat surprised by the resolution and began to splutter it was unacceptable so I simply said it was winter, I'm busy, I'm needing gas and he had just wanted pictures but by then it was dark. I said I would text him the address when I have a moment and he can send someone to put a new padlock on and that I was not preventing access to my land as I am always here during working hours, but his company had prevented me accessing my land which was not on. He said he would send someone in the next few weeks with a new padlock if I could just text the address (clearly the man does not own a pen and paper)..
A time waste yes, but a nice resolution.Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became

what a palaver for you. We use the term brute ignorance when describing vnms simple solution 😆 it solves a lot of pesky issues

Go VNM!Ridiculous they expect you to go out in the dark again for this
look forward to hearing from the accountant on this tax paid -DON'T BUY STUFF (from Frugalwoods)
No seriously, just don’t buy things. 99% of our success with our savings rate is attributed to the fact that we don’t buy things... You can and should take advantage of discounts.... But at the end of the day, the only way to truly save money is to not buy stuff. Money doesn’t walk out of your wallet on its own accord.

Wishing you the very best of everything @Watty1 and looking forward to continuing to share your journey.Really pleased that you're getting your accountant to look into the tax situation re Ex, and if justice/Karna is done he will be 'hoist on his own petard' - he can't be allowed to get away with having it both ways!Keeping my fingers crossed about the barn.... sending good vibes your way.
