As a temporary measure I have used a blackout curtain on a shower rail. It is still in use on the porch side of the internal door, to keep the drafts at bay. Not only cheap but have the advantage of needing no drilling so can be used whilst thinking what you really want to do. I also have one that I use from time to time so I can keep the windows open as I seem to be very attractive to things that bite.

I remember learning that elderly people often go downhill especially at first when moving into a care home - how much this is a deterioration that would have happened anyway, perhaps precipitated by whatever prompted the move to have 24 hour support, and how much is about having to cope with a lot of changes, I don't know. However the changes aspect must have quite an effect. New people, new routines, things not where they're usually put - all big things to take on board. I wonder if some people just cope by handing over all responsibility?
The shower rail for the curtain is a great idea. If there are still such things as January/Boxing Day sales, you might find the perfect curtains then. Ouch to the price of fencing but it's an investment.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)

I think some of the increase in dementia in hospital is down to dehydration.

I am left wondering how people manage life admin and work, I would be exasperated if an employee had spent to long on the phone in work time! (Note to self, be an understanding boss when new person starts).
As a retired person I can truthfully say I had NO IDEA how much life admin I did during working hours(to be fair I would sometimes have downtime while large data queries processed). No one tells you you don't get Bank Holidays off. And I resent emptying the dishwasher in my own time rather than while waiting for the kettle to boil

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effortMortgage Balance = £0

The nursing home have explained this is the beginning of the end for the VNM and that a couple of health issues are unlikely to resolve. (Thanks for the comment about dehydration, I think that is very likely but I have noticed the nursing home are checking she is drinking water and are really on top of this which is great)
The VNM asked his mother if she wanted to know what had been said, she did so he explained and she fixed a very hard stare and said "absolute rubbish, totally wrong". Nothing like strength of will I suppose.Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became

In house news, the tension rod with one half of the cheap curtains looks really good. I'm very surprised and so pleased with it I'm thinking I might not buy a blind for that spot, but might have a go at shortening the curtain to fit and leave it (is wunderweb still a thing?) It is the window on the stairs, the dog and cat look out of this one a lot and for what I spent I will not mind "animal wear and tear". Because of the animals I went for a more expensive tension rod so it would not come down and am super pleased, the window looks finished for less than £20
Really didn't expect that!Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became

Yes you can still get wonderweb but if the curtain is heavy you might need to replace now and then but should be ok as you will not be washing it that often. Trick is to iron it on and then not move it until it is cool that makes it stick better.Save £12k in 25 No 49

The car has been collected. Getting a resolution was a performance but I am not really any worse off now. The money will go towards a new car so has been put aside. The elderly fun mini has developed a problem which the VNM has explained can be fixed but he suggests I look to sell it as soon as it has been through the MOT next year which is February so then I will look to buy a proper 4 wheel drive for me and WattyDog. I did find a little Rav4 to replace my much loved scrapped car on line but is more than I really want to spend although the temptation to ring up and see if a deal can be done is very high! Please no encouragement LOL as I'd need to sell the mini complete with problem!
I'll stock the freezer with milk and frozen veggies and since my new found love of economy cooking and the slow cooker we should be fine over the worst of the months this year. It was always daft and not very MSE to have 2 cars anyway and WattyDog can squish himself into the mini if needs must.Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became
