Rosa_Damascena said:@goldfinches - there is something about the covers of Penguin books that I find so comforting. Maybe its the thought of a soft spine? Even the sight of a cooked chicken (anathema to a committed vegetarian) doesn't detract.
This committed vegetarian is also hankering after one of the enamel trays the chicken is resting on so wish me luck in my chazza searching.7 -
Oooooh, wish I’d had all of your advice about the ‘human cuckoos’ at the time, (love that description!). Anyhoo, I spent some of my going backwards time composing a snitty email to ScotRail….was sorely tempted to turn on my keyboard clicks in competition with annoying passenger but restrained myself! We mentioned our tale of woe to the LNER staff on the next leg of our journey and they gave us extra wine, coffee, water, snacks, wraps, crisps, fruit….they really were superb!
Back on home turf today and a quick gallop around the Northallerton chazza shops got me a nice new Radley purse/wallet in black leather mock croc….bit pricey at £10 but an online squiz found it selling currently for £89!
@Cherryfudge I really must make an effort and visit Helmsley again….I was put off by all the bikers and the parking problems in the past. Love the Walled Garden too!

Helmsley parking was fraught in the summer but it's a bit better now. There are always lots of bikers and I can't blame them for wanting to cross that vast moor towards the sea! But I suppose a town like that needs its share of tourists, including me... it's one of my favourite places. You'd better get in quick if you're to catch the pop-up chazza near Oxfam as it's closing soon.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)

Rant mode! ScotRail are rubbish. Treated ourselves to First Class rail travel on this trip. Our reserved seats coming home had people sitting in them who refused to move! No staff around of course. Ended up sitting miles apart & travelling backwards🤢* No promised complimentary refreshments either on a 3.5hr journey…..aaargghh!
Meanwhile the Tesco book shelf (suggested 50p a book for charity) revealed a gem yesterday. Tall Tales Test Match Special by Agnew and Tufnell. Perfect extra for himself as he always listens to the test matches and complains that they aren't shown on BBC. Decision now is does he get it for his birthday or Christmas? Christmas I think as there's a book he wants (the latest Osman murder mystery) for his birthday that will need to be bought new in the next week.
I don't mind Jonathan Agnew but I find Phil Tufnell to be completely obnoxious. No man is worth crawling on this earth.

I am going to admit to purse envy there! Very nice indeed.Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became
In the event the proverbial hits the fan then co-habitees are better stashing their cash than being mortgage free !!5 -
Lovely buys. 2 paperbacks bought today £1 each. Long wait at checkout as Lady in front of me bought a huge pile of clothes - I did wonder if they were all for her or to sell on though I wouldn’t have thought there would be any profit? Must have been 30 items.4

I had a relatively big haul from a local chazzer yesterday, the following for £12:
- BNWT Christmassy tablecloth in cream and gold
- Cath Kidstone tote bag, great for small top-up shops
- Large (30cm x 30cm) toiletry case which I think is Soap & Glory
- Pair of jeans - just to wear around the house
- Pair of Next tailored black trousers (a just-in-case pair, as a size too large and also with an elasticated waist)
- Thick cardigan that will go well with the many blue and white striped tops I wear with one of my many pairs of blue jeans
- Fine knit cardigan to sling over an all-black work outfit
- Principles black sleeveless top with plenty of pink sparkles
- The piece-de-resistance, a quilted Damart anorak in peacock blue, like this minus the hood:
No man is worth crawling on this earth.
