I ventured into the West End on Saturday and took in the sights and sounds of Marylebone High Street. Of course I couldn't resist visiting two of my old-time chazzer haunts.
First on the list was the Oxfam with the large selection of books at the rear. The bric-a-brac gave me a useful benchmark: a giant JD Sports mug (the type Amazon used to give away for free in their orders) was priced at £2, so I knew it wasn't going to be cheap. Th books were just the kind of thing I like to read, and I would have happily hoovered up a shelf full had it not been for the prices! Paperbacks started at £3, most were much more although to be fair many were author-signed copies and I am unlikely to find these titles locally. So I left empty-handed.
Onto the next - CRUK - which had a big sign in the window indicating 25% off donated items. Prices inside made Oxfam look reasonable!! But again much of this was designer clobber which I have no interest in. Give me good quality high street merchandise any day.
All was not lost though: I compensated for my lack of chazzer-success with 3 TGTG bags which came in at less than £10 and provided a lovely cold spread for the family in the evening. Bakeries in London offer products far superior to what is on offer locally! No man is worth crawling on this earth.

Popped into the village charity shop today and found a mug for 50p that reads "Mr B" so bought that for my partner whose name begins with B so that was a bit of fun.
Then found 3 cushions for £1 each that will be lovely in the garden on the garden benches so very pleased with those, (covers in washing machine already), a candle, a T-shirt and a belt. Total spent £5.50 The cushions are cream and green check and I think will be lovely in the garden.
They have feather filled pads. Should I do anything with those from a hygiene point of view?Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became

I'm wondering if sticking them in the freezer would be helpful?
the normal problem with feather pillows from a bed is not just cleanliness but also smell. But if these are under your butts no one's going to notice any smell. If they do have any just a few days in the spring sunshine being blown through on the wash line might be sufficient.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe, Old Style Money Saving and Pensions boards. If @Miró and I are a bit quiet - the car boot sale has been cancelled again due to the quagmire. It's saving me a fortune.
I did buy a useful-looking top for £2.99 in Age Concern the other day, but it's going back as it's not a good fit. I miss fitting rooms in charity shops. Meanwhile I'm getting things out of the loft and so far have found a skirt that I put aside years ago as needing repair, so that might be a 'shopping at home find' if I can manage to make the necessary alterations. Pics here.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)

@Cherryfudge Have you made it to either of the two CB’s that has run? Last week’s ended up with vans & cars having to be dragged out of the mud! And no idea when Woodfield is going to start. Oh woe is us ☹️
Anyhoo….didded the chazza shops Ripon today and came away with a navy Autograph dress with an unusual swirly seaming detail from the hospice shop for £7 and a pair of bnwt’s M & S Egyptian cotton pillowcases in ivory for £4 from one of the other shops.
Midweek tripette to Otley got me a white Hush t-shirt and a Woolovers purple cardi in a cashmere/merino mix….99p each from the St Gemma’s Hospice shop.4 -
@Miró, we made it to one - I got the most beautifully soft cashmere jumper for 50p, but am still working on getting rid of stains on it. (White vinegar, cold water and baby shampoo: it seems to be heading in the right direction). For 50p, it was worth a punt.
I imagine if today's had gone ahead, some of the stalls would have ended up in Scarborough, or the sea. Beautiful day, but somewhat breezy!
Good that you saw the Woolovers cardi before I did: I love things like that!I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)

Waving hello to all and very pleased at having finally felt well enough to get out and about again; it's been dreadfully dull stuck on the sofa all this winter, although I have enjoyed reading about everyone's finds.
I ventured downstairs in the original Oxfam shop this week which took some doing as the flight is very steep and I still need a walking stick but the books are all down in the basement so down I went and pounced on this Elizabeth David for £2.59. Then I stopped in at the Oxfam bookshop on my way home and after again negotiating an awkward lot of stairs found this Australian Women's Weekly for £1.99 and a Posy Simmonds for £2.99.
I'm amazed the Posy Simmonds was so cheap as she's currently the subject of a huge retrospective exhibition at the Pompidou Centre in Paris but all the better for me to enjoy reading the story.8 -
@goldfinches
don't blame you for pouncing on an Elizabeth David book. All of them are treats.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe, Old Style Money Saving and Pensions boards.
