  • 6 months pregnant - partner scarpered at first sign of the line going blue !! so forgive me if I am a wee bit emotional.

Me and DS7 been "happily" living with my folks for last 6 years whilst I built a property company that is now paying for them to have a very nice retirement - as to be quite honest they would be up the proverbial creek without the paddle ina couple of years IYSWIM.

Spent the last couple of days on my feet in the kitchen - dinner party for their best friends last night (full 5 courses) - full turkey dinner today (at Dads insistance - cos it wouldn't be Christmas without the roast and fourteeen veg) Note: I'm doing the cooking cos all of us kids actually learned to cook in self defence IYSWIM - LOL

    I am - frankly - shattered.

Scrimped for months to get together a deposit for my new place ( moving in Feb) and to get my DS exactly the precious three things he wanted on his Christmas list. All of this whilst secretly collecting the bits n pieces of presents that my folks have dropped hints about since the summer. Even spent 13 nights cooking 13 types of jam, marmalade, chutney, jelly and pickle to give away as presents to all those "friends" of theirs who you can only visit if you've "got a little something"

I have been so careful to get everyone EXACTLY the things they most desired - and to be quite honest they were all absolutely delighted with their presents this morning - and it was lovely to see everyone so happy.

Trouble is - and I know I am going to seem like the most ungrateful cow, but the presents they gave me were to be quite honest - pants! on a positive note the local charity shop will have quite a haul when they open up after the holidays.

2 annuals - that my Dad has already read and I've been instructed to read and return to him for his collection.

A bag of smellies - the kind my Mum has only just "remembered" triggers my skin condition. So straight to the charity shop with them I guess.

3 books - 2 of which I have already read (borrowed from the library, so they have seen them lying on the table over the last month) The third, well frankly not the type of abusive childhood, abusive adulthood book this lady wants to read (having bought the t-shirt if you see what I mean) Much more the kind of book my Mum would read - so maybe I should slip it into her reading pile instead.

A vomit coloured zip-up fleece dressing gown. For when I go into hospital - Awwwwww!!!! Trouble is that it is in a size 10-12. Last time I was that size I was twelve!! And ladies you know what happens to the boobie area in the last trimester:rotfl: Chances of this particular item ever appearing on my back - precisely nil.

And to compound the feeling of being invisible to my family, feeling fat and abandoned by my partner- they bought me a chocolate cookery book - oh and chocolate cocoa powder and bars to use in the recipes. Trouble is - it may have escaped their notice over that last 38 years of my life - but I don't like chocolate, never have, even as a kid:confused: . Makes me throw up and I come over all rashy.

I am truly invisible in this house - after all these years they still do not have one clue of a single solitary gift that would make me happy instead of depressed.

Made and early new years resolution - next year it is the kids and I on our own. I am going to buy my parents one present each - and stuff it!! I am spending the balance of my Christmas savings pot on me and the kids. At least I will have some treats that actually treat me instead of other people.

Sorry for the long rant - but had a good cry now and feel better -

Feel free to call me an ungratefull cow now

Memory girl you sound like you've had a bit of a time of it. Never mind. Next year will be different as you;ve promised yourself it will be and stick to it.

Well, my little niggle now sounds like nothing really but its my brother and he really bugs me.

Hes over from Spain staying with his son and visiting my Mum in the care home (she had a bad stroke a few years ago and is immobile, recently taking a turn downhill). When I saw her a fortnight ago she slept through the whole visit -been sleeping a great deal it seems. Brother arrives and she wakes up and seems quite alert he says.............until today and she's not so good. He rings me up to tell me this, which is upsetting in itself, and then proceeds to ridicule the presents my kids and grandkids have bought for my Mum. The state she's been in its been hard for anyone to know what to get her so my teenage grandchildren bought her a silver bucket with some chocolates in and squeezy teddy (intention being that she can try and strengthen her weak hand). Up till very recently Mum could suck on a chocolate and enjoy it so as far as my grandkids were concerned they were giving the gt nan a treat.
Their dad and his new girlfriend framed a photo of the new baby, now 6 months older than the last photo she had. It was a 'generation photo -me, son, teenage grandkids and baby. My brother moaned about yet another photo to clutter up the place. My son had been stuck what to get her and thought at least in her brighter moments she would see her grandchildren if only in a photo.
Younger son bought her a lightweight scarf. He knows Mums in bed most of the time biut has been got out of bed on her brighter days. She's always felt the cold, being immobile and has a blanket for her legs so he thought a lightweight scarf would keep her neck safe from drafts.
That all makes sense to me, knowing its so hard to buy for folk as ill as my Mum so why does my brother have to spoil my day by ridiculing my kids efforts ?
Sorry..............had to have a wee moan about it. OH told me not to get upset about it but my brother has always had this way of making me and mine feel the 'lesser' people, if you know what I mean.
Still, thats my little 'set back' for the day over and done with.
Now at least I feel better.
    Mary

  • Awww Memorygirl, I don't think you are ungrateful at all. It sounds as if the presents weren't bought with you in mind but something they like.

Why are you running around cooking 5 course meals and making jams for your parent's friends? You should be taking it a lot more easier with the baby on the way.

I hope your new home and new life work out for you and just think you can enjoy next Christmas doing what you want to do. From now on just focus on yourself and the children. You can't please everyone all of the time so you may aswell just please yourself! :)

Oh Memorygirl, my mother bought me a purple fleece full length dressing gown and Bridget Jones Diary when my husband left me. Not sure what the (mixed?) message was there? I do feel for you. Take it easy tomorrow x

Our problems were purely practical ones but might give some of those facing deeper problems a laugh...

First, our TV chose Xmas eve, just as the shops had shut, to break down. It had been working absolutely fine, even think it's still within guarantee (just). But of course it was too late to do anything about it till after Xmas. So went to get old portable out of the shed. But it was raining in the shed... (not outside..) due to condensation (NOTE: never buy a metal shed!) so THAT one was kaput too.

Took portable down from bedroom so at least had something (very small) to watch on Xmas day.

All going swimmingly today, goose on, vegis all ready to go, potatoes pre-cooked.. when ...... all the electricity fused. Seemed to be to do with the cooker. To cut a long story short, managed to get electrics working again, but all the cooker was kaput and xmas dinner only half done. Luckily the goose was largely finished as didn't really fancy microwaving a goose.. In the nick of time, remembered the electric steamer we had sitting at the back of the cupboard never used and got it out to cook the veg/warm the potatoes (not roast, but probably healthier anyway...). Not only that, landlady was away so we could be doing a fair bit creative cooking not requiring a hob/oven over the next few days.....

Then, whilst sitting at table, OH managed to simultaneously knock over the lamp and knock over a chess game he was playing with DD1, reducing her to tears...

About 5 minutes later while trying to stop DS melting chocolate buttons into the new tablecloth, he knocked over a champagne glass and it broke (that was probably about the only thing I was really sad about, as it was a very precious wedding present, and very rarely used).

He's now clearing up the broken glass from the tablecloth as I type, whilst I've escaped to put a very tired DS to bed.....

Anyone else had more xmas mishaps than us? I think it must be a record!

Made sausage sandwiches for breakfast and we all opened presents in stages!

Had pork for DH, chicken breast for two DDs and a veg roast for other DDs with roast spuds, cabbage, leek, sprouts, carrots and roasted parsnip with vegetable gravy and cheese sauce.

Everyone liked their presents and had a really good day. DDs are shocked that I have heard of brands like Urban Decay and that they have makeup that is what they want (as well as dvds and books). I do listen, I do!!!!

DD(18) seems to have got the virus now - dark circles under her eyes and washed out!!!

She is on the couch and her sisters are keeping an eye on her.

Dds got me a lovely fluffy pink dressing gown ,nice top, shower stuff and a handbag which I have tranferred all he stuff into ready to use.

When asked what DH got me I pointed out we wanted a new house and it would be a bit difficult to wrap!!! Then produced nice pink p.j.s

Will go through soon and see the doom and gloom on the soaps.

Hugs to everyone and have a good day.
