@Prodigal50 welcome to this small group. This is where the small magic starts. It helps to get into a savings habit. There is no judgement on any amount saved its there and that is what counts. Some accounts do this for you when you set up an automation. Generally on here we tend to do it manually, so there is the self gratification on our achievements. I look for any small bits each time I go into my account. When I'm flush I round down to the next £5 otherwise it really is pennies. I empty the pot each month to go where I can get a better rate of interest.
If you are going to pay down debt and still need an emergency fund you could do 50/50. Have you got a plan? Please share if you want to. We have all arrived here for the same reason on our journey of us controlling our money and not it controlling us.
    Good luck.

@Divingmad good progress getting it into the pots and see them building up.

  • This is a great idea and I'd like to join in. I'm going to start rounding up my purchases to the nearest £5. So if I spend £11.40 on something, I'll transfer £3.60 into savings. I feel like doing it like this will make me more reserved with spending because I'll be thinking of the rounded up value but it should also mean I see my saving pot grow at a good rate where I do decide to make a purchase.

@DebtFreeWannabe27 Nice to see someone starting here at the same time as me :-)

@2Scratters thanks for the welcome! So I hope to have my consumer debts paid down by end of 2026. I really see the value of making small payments that are hardly noticeable. Since I started to get more active here and have a good look around there are two of the challenges that seemed really helpful for me:
Payment a Day (£10 a day to CC1 so far)
    And yep...

    Tilly Savings!

Every time I check the bank I am rounding down to the nearest £10 and putting that into my savings account where the emergency fund is. So far this week I have Tilly saved £29.46 and the emergency fund is at £1453.22

It a happy little habit that makes me feel good.

Again thanks for the welcome :-)

@Prodigal50 @DebtFreeWannabe27 (welcome to here)  you are both off to a good start. The world of MSE is a revelation when it comes to taking charge of your money. The lifestyles we have been sold of something that we need and in reality we really don't. You have got an emergency fund started already and that is hard to get rolling. Do you remember starting it? getting that first 30 then 50 and something needing paying and having to start again. Yet, realising you actually had the money to pay it and not borrow or use a CC that also gives you power over your money.

I got missed off the payroll this month  :o never in over 30years has that happened..... hey ho! it has thrown me off kilter a bit.
My TT for this month is 37.32. That has now gone into a better rate interest yielding account. Them pennies need to work.

    Have a good week
