Good Afternoon!
would love to join too! 3 bed Victorian town house which is rammed! Cellar contains the contents of my Late Dad’s and attic full too🙄
Ideally looking to downsize in next few years prior to retirement.
Made a start yesterday on paperwork, but realistically we need to make 2024 the year we bite the bullet!!16 -
leftatthetrafficlights said:I've decided that a decluttering list is the way forward for me - there are 24 items to do/declutter in total throughout the year (in no particular order) :
- DD's chest of drawers
- DD's wardrobe
- My own chest of drawers
- My own wardrobe
- My mountain of toiletries in the bathroom
- My mountain of toiletries not in the bathroom!!
- Kitchen cupboard - tea and bisuits
- Kitchen cupboard - dried food
- Kitchen cupboard - Tins and sauces
- Utility Cupboard
- Utility... stuff not in the cupboard!
- Under stairs
- Shoe bench
- Coats
- Craft room shelves
- Craft room desk
- Craft room.... floor!!
- Under bedroom 1 bed
- Under bedroom 2 bed
- Loft
- Garage (again!!)
- Playroom
- Books!!! (The DH's)
- Random items on top of high places will be the finale!

So....
- clear out front room by 3rd Jan when new kitchen bits are being delivered. Non negotiable.
- 7th Jan - clear everything out of the kitchen, store in front room hopefully but also delivering some bits directly to charity shop as no longer required (like the cheese slicer OH unearthed yesterday and complained "these never work!!")
- Food stuff to the garage fridge or bin ready for waste collection the next day.
- 8th Jan - old kitchen is decluttered. Easy as it's not us doing the work but does mean the drive will be a war zone until the bits are gone.
- Old kitchen bits cleared from drive.
- Fridge and freezer cleared from drive - our responsibility so likely have to pay council. The freezer is fine but the fridge is a mess so for the bin.
- declutter all money from wallets as we'll be eating out alllllll week long.
- From 11th Jan - enjoy clearing out the freezer of all the lovely stuff we haven't been able to cook for the last month!!
- Reassemble kitchen taking another look at stuff going back into shelves/drawers - no we don't need a junk drawer!!!
- Return book shelf to the hall from front room as it needs to be shifted to make way for stuff being moved from front room to kitchen. Check we actually need the random books stored there.
- Sleep
- Sell old dishwasher.
- Sell old sofa while awaiting new one and bedroom furniture for the front room.
- Find out what is living in the corner of the bedroom by OH's wardrobe. I can see a hat and a plaid shirt but not sure what else is there.
- Sell/give away 2 tvs in the garage. Plus remotes, dvd player.
- Find hiking boots and ensure no mice have moved in, grease them (boots, not mice) ready for Nordic trek.
- Decide if last year's bird nest in car port can stay or should be moved to a bush somewhere (the better choice I think)
- Get OH to go through all the manly tools he possesses and get rid of those that don't work, set aside duplicate stuff and excess screws and random bits of wood/wire/pipe to charity workshop.
- And then things all get a bit vague......
- Clear shed
- Clear other shed
- Clear greenhouse
- Clear carport
- Clear garage
- Clear large stump in garden infected with honey fungus
- discard any winter wear not worn in the last 2 years. no, don't wait til it will fit again.
- discard any summer wear not worn in the last 3 years. Same no as in 26.
- See Northern Lights to tick something off OH's bucket list.
- Consider if flying to Canada to see the total eclipse the week after returning from Norway is possible. Just to second tick OH's list.
- Get rid of rug in the garage - I'm sure it's gone mouldy in there, shouldn't have agreed for it to be stored at all.
- oh and about 500 more things.....

Well, I think I've joined in before - but obviously not for long enough! My "sewing room" is completely out of hand and needs a major declutter, as do several other areas of the house - the conservatory and the porch have cluttered up again after one of my small-business storage sheds collapsed at the same time as we ended up without either of our vehicles - and the place (a Scrapstore) I would have given away excess stock to, id I'd been able to get there, had to close unexpectedly as their building had become unsafe! And we just won't mention the garage until the rest are sorted...
4-6 bed family home of 30+ years here, with 4 full-time inhabitants now but 8 at one point. DD1's boyfriend is here PT and DS3 returns for academic holidays too; he's a lecturer, still single. 2 bedrooms have been put to other uses - OH's WFH office and my "sewing" room; I do sell some of the things that I make up there, but they are mostly for gifts, or for wearing/soft furnishings. And two of the downstairs "reception" rooms are used as bedrooms too. The reasonably big kitchen & tiny living room are fairly uncluttered bearing in mind the number of people using them, and the different uses to which they are put, but things are well & truly out of hand elsewhere & I need to put some major effort into sorting them out & getting rid of stuff we don't use or need. Again! It doesn't help that all the rooms except the kitchen are small; it sounds like a big house but actually it's just a lot of smallish spaces that need a total overhaul to suit the life we live now, rather than 25 years ago when we had 5 small children. So I'd love to join in and turn it into the lovely home that it could be now, please!

I look forward to seeing you all, new and old travellers, on the journey in 2024.

When we moved into our house, we inherited a huge larder cupboard. I've lost count of the number of times I've sorted it out but I've gone in and been quite ruthless. We now only have two tubs of medication, and a bag of expired stuff to be disposed of at the pharmacy. I'm also looking at recipes that use a lot of dessicated coconut - apparently I had three bags of it!17

Be sure to cut them in advance of eating so all the calories can leak out.
