weenancyinAmerica said:Temple University in the United States puts out a list for the professors of what the incoming freshman might be used to and what won't work as some events aren't in their memory banks at all. No references to television sets that need to be turned on by knobs, never heard of the millennium bug and our fear of computer problems, even in this country, 9/11 is not an event that happened during their lifetime. Trying to keep up basically with living history so as to be relevant to the younger people. We had a young lady living here and sometimes she would ask what we originally thought were strange questions, than realized she had had no idea what a hand-held can opener was or even what a tea kettle was used for. It is just a totally different world.
There was what looked like a bus tour of you American students milling around looking as well as many other nationalities . One young man on the student tour bus said quite loudly
" So who was this Lennon, wasn't he the Russian guy "
There was a shocked total silence and the small crowd looked at this young chap in askance.the tour guide ushered him away rather quickly
for his own safety I think
Little did I realise back then that my then 17 year old eldest grandson, would one day live in the building behind the Dakota building with his wife and my great granddaughterGreatgranddaughter Daisy plays in the park every day and is fascinated by the things people leave on the memorial.
We saw a guitar, a punnet of strawberries and lots of things when we were there, and people sit and remember him and some even sing or hum tunes usually 'Imagine' I wonder what he would have thought of it. Nice that although some through youth maybe don't realise what a force of nature to music the Lennon-McCartney were.

Mrs SD, the cricket bat/ phone thing was back in the day when mobile phones had a little antenna on the top. When I worked at school, I regularly had to ask the kids how to do something on the computer! I think it's marvellous that everyone born now will never know a time without tech.
No Bakewell puddings purchased, I find them too sweet tbh but we did go to the brewery and had pizza which we had to take half home to have whilst half watching the footie.
I am feeling more like myself today. It does me no good being on my own too long. I have decided though that we will move again. Not soon but there will be another move.
Whilst home alone over the weekend, I washed the loose covers off one of the sofas and I sewed a hole in my 65 year old teddy bear's seam and put him in the washer. He is white and hasn't come out much different in colour but his fur is so soft now. I am now starting to knit hat 6, this remaining wool is everlasting.
Mr V wore a shirt yesterday that is far too big so after it has been through the wash it will go into the chazzer bag.
I have a lot to squeeze in before it rains today. wash our sheets and the other sofa loose covers and a bit of balsam bashing. They say one years seed 7 years weed. Only another 4 years to go before I get on top of it then!

Mr B has decluttered a tshirt at me. I bought it for him but he's declared it "too snug" (aka 3 sizes too small). it fits me nicely but looking at it I'm not sure I like the design so it may go in the next CS bag.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe, Old Style Money Saving and Pensions boards. 1daisy_1571, in line with the discussion about years, I am constantly surprised about how old films are 😦 Currently watching Die Hard - 36 years old

Have at last caught up with the thread - hugs to all having a tough time.
Finally have a new to me car so I have a bit of independence back - it has only taken since February. OH has made it to the hospital and will be there for 2 weeks. I offered to find somewhere to stay nearby but he said he will be too tired for visits so have stayed at home and have made a start on to do list and decluttering. Contents of car file have been shredded or put on the scrap pile for future to do lists, sticky labels that have our address on have been burned, some phone calls made and more food uu. My meals are going to heavily feature soup over the next few weeks as I want to defrost the freezer and there is a lot of it in there.

On a show here about decluttering, the commentator said that if you have items to sell that are "attached to a time period", to sell them soon as the next generations won't be interested at all and won't remember the people in them - things like Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra records, and dolls from your childhood. We are having trouble selling DVDs at our Book Sales because so much are easy to access on line. And we finally found a couple of places to take VHS and Beta tapes - most charity shops don't want to bother and we can't even give them away because most people don't have players for them. One of our branch library's will have a new center opening soon that will transfer VHS tapes to DVDs to you can save any special memories you filmed - but what happens when there are no more ways to view the DVDs?14

Rushing in (ok at a snails pace) to say hi. I finally saw my mum at the weekend and she is packed ready to go for her kidney op. She has to have a pre op thing and another scan but her dr said it should be very soon. I asked if she had a list of questions for the oncologist and she has. I added a couple that she hadn’t thought of.
My energy levels have been all over the place which is only natural but I did see one of my cousins at the weekend (his parents) (one of mums sisters) came up and we snuck off to the pub for a good catch up. It was lovely seeing him and we both agreed that the grey hair and wrinkles was just an illusion!I’ve decluttered loads of books from my kindle and rather too much chocolate…..oops.
currently got 2 days leave as I needed a break from work and of course it’s poured it down!!!! So no gardening or fence painting for me!

I agree Muddy. it's been a rough year for a lot of people health wise. Best wishes to you and yours.
Forgot to say I cleaned the oven on Saturday. It wasn't really dirty but I want to keep it nice and look after the new kitchen.
I am now on hat 7. I need to make a lot of pom poms and then I will be done with knitting for a while.
More balsam bashed, I must step it up before it spreads seed . I managed a bit longer today as I wore my walking boots which support my feet more. The lack of a summer is a big hindrance.
Mr V has spent the day checking and packing up all the kit used at the week end. A few connectors and shiz binned. He also gave our neighbour who has a fire, a big wooden frame he used in the carnival.
Our next door neighbour is moving out. currently a rental but I believe it will be going up for sale. We did toy with the idea of buying it and quickly dismissed it. The times they are a changin.
