I need my heat and will still be running my heating during the saving session. For the sake of the literal single penny of electric the pump on the boiler will consume in that time and the amount of reward (perhaps equivalent to 2p) from turning it off, I don't think I'll bother.Proud member of the wokerati, though I don't eat tofu.Home is where my books are.Solar PV 5.2kWp system, SE facing, >1% shading, installed March 2019.Mortgage free July 20233 -

Today for 1 hour between 17:30 - 18:30
Opt in now to earn 1800 Octopoints - worth £2.25 - for every unit of power you save."Now available for opt-in.
To possibly answer my own question, maybe it's because these are tests and they want to know who is actually aware of it?
Any increase in usage over the savings period would count against the total payout Octopus receives from NGESO (to pass on to the customers), so it’s really in their business interests to make sure the majority of people who are opted in intend to make a saving. In an extreme example, if everyone was automatically opted in and the people not taking part end up using more energy than what was saved by those who do take part, this would result in Octopus having to pay money back to NG as well as paying out to all the customers who did save - that could be a very costly mistake.
And of course in addition to this, as you point out, more can be gained from the data by having some positive confirmation on which households are and aren’t choosing to take part on any given day. Otherwise there’d be no way to tell who made an active reduction and who just happened to be going out for dinner tonight.Moo…1 -

I've just been across the road to my 'elderly' neighbours, signed them up for the session, set up their inverter to charge and discharge at the appropriate times, and given them the shove they needed to sign up for Tracker from SVT,
