I’ve just applied and now trying to set up the switch but I get an error message. “Sorry the switch cannot be done at this time”. Do you have to wait a while before initiating the switch?
I didn't, I opened the account in the app, deposited £10, activated blue rewards and selected the switch, took me about 15 minutes,

Not heard from them but the bank I am switching has notified me it's in progress

I was using iPhone and Safari

Haven’t deposited money yet but like you using iPhone and Safari. Looks like a call to them tomorrow.
  • Thanks @boingy and @PRAISETHESUN - It's a bit late now, but I'll start looking into trying to open a barclays account and setting up new DDs as soon as I get a chance.  Cheers.

Ah ha the the £800 is to qualify for the blue rewards not part of the £175 incentive conditions
So no need to sign up for Blue Rewards?

The direct debits need to be active, they need to be set up and registered with the account you switch in. It doesn't matter if money was ever collected. E.g. a credit card which is lying around but at zero balance and you give the credit card provider the direct debit mandate to collect from your account should there be funds to collect.

You only have to join Blue Rewards as per condition and that will cost you a fee of £5 next month so the switch profit is £170. If you want to waive your fees to get the full £175, your direct debits must have paid out from the Barclays account after your switch is complete. In other words, money must have been collected as this is the requirement to get the fees waived for Blue Rewards.

    Blue Rewards T&C'S

The second working day of December is the 4th December, unless Saturday is counted as a working day, which would make it the 2nd December.

You would need to cancel Blue Rewards on Friday 30th Nov by 5pm in order to avoid being charged the
£5 fee. The second part and the 14 days is something I am not clear about.

Furthermore, I also don't know if Blue Rewards has to remain active until the incentive is paid. Should this be the case, and you only meet the criteria late November, it could take you well into December to receive the incentive. If you only initiate your switch on the last day of November, it then takes 7 working days to complete and you apply 28 working days for them to pay (unless they pay earlier) it could be January 2024 before they pay due to bank holidays. In that case you would be charged again in early January but the fees should be waived as long as pay in
£800 and have DD payments collected in December.

For the avoidance of doubt, I would wait until the 4 days freeze period is over, you got your debit card and the account is fully operational. Put £800 in and back out again and you're covered.

My interpretation might be total nonsense so if in doubt, always call, email, chat with Barclays and get the call recorded or something in writing so you have evidence and grounds should you need to dispute something at a later stage.
  • I'm confused. It says you have to open the account via the Barclays app but the app wants me to register and insists on an account number, which obviously I haven't got until I apply via the app?

There's a hole in my bucket, dear Liza dear Liza.

There should be 2 buttons on the initial screen. One to say, I am already a customer or something similar and one saying I am new to Barclays. If the latter isn't there, uninstall the app, switch off your phone, wait a minute and switch back on and download again. Others mentioned this in the earlier pages of this thread that the app is behaving strangely. Android and Apple apps seem to make a difference too. Hope it works.

I’m in the same boat. I’ve deleted the app and downloaded it again but I still just see the option to “register for the app” and it won’t let me without an existing Barclays product.

Officially yes you have to be a brand new customer.

Assuming those old accounts are no longer open it might be worth a shot to see how long their memories are unless anybody else is able to clarify more
Thanks Volcane, but dealyboy has just posted that I must not have held a Barclays account since 1st Nov 2023?
The rules change by the day lol, but this looks to be in your favour thankfully….
Yeah, we're all quite confused but I'm pressing ahead with a switch anyway. Worst case it costs me a bit of time.

The confusing bit of the T&Cs is the last bit of this:

You will not be eligible for this offer if:
    • You already hold a Barclays Basic Bank Account,  Barclays Bank Account, Barclays Bank Account with a Personal Overdraft, Barclays Bank Account with Blue Rewards, Platinum Bank Account, Mortgage Current Account, or a Premier Current Account on the date of application or [before 31st October 2023]
No-one is quite sure what to make of those square brackets!

I spoke to the Complaints person who looked into this account holding condition for about 15 mins a week ago. She told me the square bracketed clause was put in because at the time of writing they hadn't decided on the start date, so kind of like a placeholder !?! :s

That was my first thought when I saw it. The big question is... Have they decided yet?   :o
