Mi 11 from release, so about 2 years.  My son's just a job in South Korea, so I'm hoping for a really cheap Samsung s22 Ultra at some point :)

Samsung A10 here purchased in 2021.

Data security is important for me (I use my phone for business and it has secure data on it), so it will be kept until it either becomes too slow or security updates are no longer available.

In the past I kept phones for about 5 years +.
In 2010/1 I bought the iPhone 4 which essentially lasted till Dec 2017. At that time I went to the Apple store to get some repairs done and was told at the time, Apple only carried h/w parts for 5 years after the phone was sold.
So I then got the iPhone 8. Then in 2020, needed the phone's battery replacing and was told Apple now recognised that people keep phones for longer than 5 years so it is possible h/w problems might be fixable if they have the replacement part.
The button on my current phone stopped working and I suppose I could get it fixed or could get a a new phone. Not decided yet.
However this repair policy does not take into account when Apple will no longer apply iOS updates to particular phone models.

The phone I'm currently using is ~ 15 years old and only accesses 2G !! So no mobile internet.
I have recently purchased a much more modern handset and I'm testing out cheap SIMs to allow us to use wifi calling when Openreach switch off PSTN here next Spring, in case we can't find a suitable VOIP solution. Not bothered by usage allowance as I still carry out all my main tasks via either the desktop PC or a cheap tablet
Have you had it in your possession for 15 years, @brewerdave? If so, you're winning so far!

Thanks for all the replies. I'd love to see any photos of particularly old handsets too if you have them.

5 years+ is impressive. And it's interesting to hear that people are perhaps keeping their handsets longer, according to that Apple rep.
  • Bought mine in 2020 to replace a phone I'd had since 2016. Still works well and holds its battery life so I can't see me replacing it for another couple of years.

I am just about to replace mine. It is a Samsung J6 which was released in 2018. It replaced a J5 which I only upgraded due to limited storage. I have been on a SIM only throughout this time. I am now planning to get a Samsung A34. I could afford an S one but the idea of spending over £500 on a mobile makes me shudder! I absolutely  would not change one after 2-3 months. I have already been putting off changing my current one for much longer than that.

Bought a Samsung 2nd hand 5yrs ago so that I could get a cheap deal with 3mobile. (no longer cheap)
I think it's about 13yrs old now and still does all I need it to.
Just checking the year I see they are still for sale so must be popular and long lasting. Battery still fine, quick charge etc. Speaker is good.

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

  • My current phone I've had for just under a year. However, I do aim for about 4-5 years before I replace one. My previous one was 4 years. And at that stage it's usually starting to choke, the screen is going funny, or the battery life is close to none existent. I always buy the phone outright and usually see what I can get for around £300. Quite happy having the previous generation too, if it means a good deal. Black Friday makes for a good time to switch.
