We'll find somewhere for it, we're considering connecting it to our other water butt rather than connecting it to a spare downpipe.

You could check with your water company or council to see if they do subsidised water butts. Although this is a composting site, they also sell water butts on there: https://getcomposting.com/

I didn't think about the speed of flow of the tap and my cheapie council subsidised one takes a while now it's not very full of water. It was from the same site Jwil mentioned. Also put it as close to the plants as you can. I hid mine out of sight right next to the house and forgot how heavy watering cans are!

If you have any tips on keeping the water clear without expensive and harmful chemicals the water in mine is ickycoloured and the butt was new last summer.

last one I bought was from the orange diy place and included a stand, watering can and the guttering adapters, I think it was about £20 all in.

I then found out that my water company will supply and fit one for free!

ETA the oak barrel ones look pretty but are not coping well with this weather!

We bought one from Wickes recently - can't recall the exact price but it was definitely a lot cheaper than that. Came with everything that was needed to install it and use it so no hidden extras, and MrEH said it was straightforward enough to install too.

    edit - this one:

Cheers gang, will ask Thames and council in the unlikely event they're running any freebie schemes

We definitely had a much reduced water butt from the council when we had the allotment not too far from you PiP - although that was a lot of years ago and they may well have changed things!

Our most recent one was about £34 from local indie garden centre. They don't need rockstar looks, they just need to do the job.

I think that with £18.5 billion of debt good old Thames have probably given away all their freebies already 🙃

Is that £185,000,000,000 in debt or have I put in too many 0's? How can a business get into so much debt? Imagine if the Chief Exec started a debt free diary on here? 🤣
